Staying Active Despite Your Desk Job

If there is one detriment to maintaining an active lifestyle it is a desk job. Some people, me included, spend hours sitting in a chair staring at a computer screen.

Apparently there are some offices who have found a way to work around this; workstations that fit over treadmills. What a great idea.

The original concept of this came from a man who suffered a leg injury in 2008. Up until then he had been active. So he came up with what is called the “TrekDesk.” He was able to continue working, walk off 26 pounds, get better sleep and eliminate his back problems.

Walking is a terrific way to burn calories, relieve stress and increase energy. But for those of us who spends hours sitting at a desk, it may seem there isn’t enough time to do it.

Actually, the basic concept of this desk is the idea of multitasking exercise and your work. There may be other creative ways that you can do this as well. Take for instance those times you get up to file papers. Doing squats instead of bending down to the cabinet may be an option.

If you can somehow manage it, get up every 10 or 15 minutes to take a quick walk. Or you could perform some of your paper tasks while standing up. Meanwhile you could flex your legs.

Another idea is to keep a set of lightweight dumbbells or a resistance band nearby. Take time throughout the day to use this equipment.

But don’t forget to take advantage of breaks and lunch time to sneak in some exercise, whether it’s a walk or some lunges. If you can take the stairs instead of the elevator, park further away from work or any other creative way you can be active, take advantage of it.

Don’t let your desk job become an excuse to not live an active lifestyle.
