Well, we’re in to the new year now, 2007, time to round up all our receipts, update our records and get ready for tax time. For many home businesses, we’re also working with a new budget and new business goals for the upcoming year. Is it also time to take a look at your work space and give it a good cleaning, overhaul and organizing too?
There’s something incredibly therapeutic and productive about cleaning out the desk–getting rid of papers and snippets of things you no longer need and gathering up the misplaced items you do need. January is a great time to head out to the sales at the office supply stores and stock up on paper, envelopes, computer ink, files and accessories to help you organize your supplies within your work space.
This is also a good time of year to spend some time cleaning up your computer files and desktop–just as you would go over your “regular” desk space, go through your computer files and discard things you no longer need, transfer older files onto a cd so you can file them or save them instead of having them clutter up your computer hard drive. You can also remove unwanted and unneeded things such as software, files, etc. from your computer. Or, you can make that purchase for the software you’ve been needing and start the new year off with that additional boost of productivity. Don’t overlook your e-mail inbox–can it stand a good cleaning out and purging too? Have you been meaning to organize your e-mail and delete unneeded ones, organize the individual messages in your inbox into files, or other ways of making e-mail more manageable and efficient?
Taking a half day or so to clean out your desk or work space, replace ink cartridges, update files and record-keeping and just doing a general cleaning of your desk will leave you feeling invigorated and motivated–ready to take on a new year of home business challenges!
