Thursday’s Child – Reece’s Rainbow

My plan is to normally do this on Wednesday but since yesterday passed without my managing to post, this week we will have “Thursday’s Child”. You don’t mind, do you?

For today’s profile I want to talk to you about Reece’s Rainbow. This is a non-profit that focuses on orphans with Down Syndrome. They work to raise awareness of the need to adopt children with Down Syndrome as well as providing a photo-listing of waiting children who have this special need. Several times a year Reece’s Rainbow does fundraisers to help create grants for the waiting children on their website. If families commit to adopt a Reece’s Rainbow child then Reece’s Rainbow also helps with fundraising and has a yahoo group to provide encouragement during the wait and after the child is home.

Take a moment to visit Reece’s Rainbow and browse through the photo-listings. These children are beautiful! Sure, they need a little extra help in life but the joy that they bring to their families far outweighs their needs. If you are unsure about adopting a child with Down Syndrome, there are several links provided by Reece’s Rainbow to help address your concerns and provide information. Please consider adopting one of these special children. All of them need homes, but the children in many Eastern European countries such as Ukraine are in desperate need of adoption and are “living on borrowed time” as is mentioned many times on the Reece’s Rainbow site. In many of these countries children with Down Syndrome will be placed in mental institutions once they reach the age of four. They will be confined to a bed and have no chance to be part of a family, to learn or to have any hope of a future. When these children are adopted they are given a chance for life!

If adoption is not for you or perhaps the timing is wrong, consider getting involved in another way. Reece’s Rainbow encourages individuals to sponsor waiting children in order to help them be adopted. The cost of international adoption is very high and if a family sees that they don’t have to shoulder the financial burden alone, they are much more likely to come forward and say yes to adopting a child.

There are lots of other resources on this website so please be sure to check it out.
