Tough Cookie – David Wisniewski

cookieThis children’s picture book is hysterical, but it’s definitely geared toward the parents. Mom and Dad will have a good time reading it to their children.

The story is patterned after the old gumshoe detective novels like Sam Spade. Our hero is a tough cookie, living in a cookie jar. He used to have it all, up there at the top, but as time passed, he fell in life and now lives down at the bottom with the crumbs. You don’t want to go down there by yourself; always travel in groups. It’s where the unsavory element hangs out. But through no fault of his own, that’s where our man lives now, working to make life better for the crumbs. As he puts it, “Life’s still sweet. Just a little stale.”

One day a classy blonde wanders in. He knows her; it’s Pecan Sandy. She’s come to warn him that his partner, Chips, has been taken by their arch enemy, Fingers. He rushes to the scene to find Chips on a stretcher, nibbled around the edges, looking crumby. Tough Cookie vows he’ll find a way to make Fingers pay. He remembers how Fingers came in and took his entire family. Somehow he’s the only one who escaped. It’s time to bring Fingers down. He makes his way to the top of the jar, waiting. It’s inevitable; it’s just a matter of time. There! The jar is opened! Tough Cookie braces himself. But he’s been grabbed! What will he do?

Suddenly his friends, all the crumbs from the bottom of the jar, throw themselves at Fingers and he lets go of our hero so he can clean off. It’s wonderful to have friends who will help you out in a pinch, and Tough Cookie realizes how very lucky he is.

I really liked this book. It’s full of cookie references and parodies of all the great detective movies. I snickerdoodled many times as I read. If you’re looking for a good laugh, this children’s picture book is for you.
