Trick-or-Treat as a Group

I’m a huge fan of group costumes. In high school my friends and I dressed up as a dozen donuts. While it was a group costume, we still had the opportunity to show off our individual personalities by embellishing our donuts with unique touches.

The base of the costume was a sweatsuit. Chocolate donuts wore brown, vanilla wore white and those dressed as Crullers wore yellow. Then, we got large inflatable rings and painted them in a variety of colors to represent different flavors. Finally, we glued on embellishments to represent the toppings, such as glitter and sequins as sprinkles, felt circles for chocolate chips and blueberries, brown paint for chocolate sauce, etc.

However, last year I saw a group costume that topped our donut getups: Condiments. A group of teens trick-or-treating in my neighborhood dressed up as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickle relish, A-1 Sauce and Hot Sauce. Then, they had one guy dressed as a hot dog and another as a hamburger. It was hilarious. What’s more, the costumes are not hard to make. Most of them can be bought at costume shops. However, if you are the slightest bit creative you could make all the condiment costumes from cardboard and some scrap fabric.

You can do so much with food costumes when trick-or-treating as a group. Of course, I realize that there are many teens out there that wouldn’t be caught dead going out in public dressed as a jar of pickle relish, so to them I would suggest going the zombie route. A group of walking undead is not an uncommon sight on Halloween. Plus, zombie costumes are a breeze to put together. All you need is some old tattered clothes, some gory make-up and a bit of fake blood. If you want to add some flare to your group costume, then have one of your pals carry around a mini boom box and you can play “Thriller” and dance around en masse at various points along the trick-or-treat route.
