"Mommy, I Don't Feel Good!"

19 Jul 2007 12:33 PM

I have suffered from motion sickness my whole life. Here are some things I do:

Sit in front, like you mentioned.

Stay cool -- when we're nauseated, our body temperature goes up. If you can stay cool, you can keep the temp. down and keep the nausea down. Use cool cloths, air conditioning, etc.

Go to sleep while driving. (Not the driver, of course. :) If you sleep through the trip, you don't get as sick.

Take Dramamine. It's fabulous -- I even took a half one to keep my stomach calm on my wedding day. :)

Creeping Doubts: Missing Something?

I don't think you *have* to have a foreign language -- they're helpful but not crucial. I don't think you have anything to have doubts about -- your kids sound awesome!

Do Video Games Affect Schoolwork? A New Study Says Yes

I think the disparagy here is between learning games and mindless games -- I too have found a lot of use in learning games, just as I have in letting my children watch tv as long as it's educational. You would not believe the things my two-year-old can do just because he's seen it on tv.

The danger, in my mind, is when kids prefer to seclude themselves with a computer when they could be interacting with other people, especially their families. Family interaction is usually one of the main things that suffers when someone spends too much time on the computer (believe me, I know -- I ended up moving my computer into the living room just so I'd be near my family more while working.)

So what does "American Pie" mean, anyway? I've heard it over and over (not 11 times an hour, though) and have never grasped the meaning.

Joy and Sorrow - The Cost of Procrastination

It's true -- so much joy comes from doing the work for someone you submitted yourself. But like you say -- she's done now and she's happier. You'll have a lot of other chances.

Sometimes They Don't Even Know Why They Are Fighting

You mean there's no logical explanation for it? So how do we cope with that?

Teaching Them against their Will

09 Jul 2007 08:24 PM

I think it's safe to say that all children have subjects they dislike, but that doesn't mean we should let them get away with not studying them. What if one child decided they didn't want to do math? It would be folly on our part to not teach them math. Unschooling or not, there are things children need to know and to leave them out of the equation is negligence.

Believe me, we've had plenty of workbooks go flying across the kitchen at my house. But I know that my children need certain skills in order to succeed, and so I continue to teach them.

These are great, Nola -- you should come up with a whole lot more and publish it as an LDS humor book!
