Dealing with a Narcissistic Family Member

My step son was raised by a narcissist mother. She threw him out 2 weeks before graduation as child support was ending. He has come a long way in the year he has lived with us, but has a great deal of anger towards his mom. He knows she is mentally ill, but he still wants to know "why" she treated him the way she did, lies, etc. How can I help him. We have a good relationship and I try and explain to him that she will never apologize or change but he wants answers. He starts to shake when he talks about her. He is working, going to a technical college, and dates so in all other areas seems to be doing well. How do I help him with the anger he feels towards her?
