Are English Language Only Laws Really Helpful? - Blog Entry

27 Nov 2006 11:33 AM

I'm back and forth on this issue. I do think the laws are a bit strict. I mean, they need to take into account kids that are JUST starting to learn English. Although immersion programs certainly seem to work for kids that travel for exchange programs! Should children have to struggle and do poorly in school just because they are just starting to learn English? Perhaps a better idea would be to allow things to be translated for them..but then TEACH the student the English required and have them repeat the question in English. Same with responses to their questions. Some sort of compromise...immersion without causing undue stress and struggling.

There are schools in some states (my niece went to one in MA) that are ethnically rich. I forget what they called it specifically, but they had students from ALL walks of life, and teaching bits and pieces about all the different cultures was part of the cirriculum. She loved it there!

Disney Cruise Lines - Activities for Kids - Blog Entry

Valorie, I will certainly do a blog on what to do as a family, and one for just the adults to do as well! I will also blow on Disney World! You picked a great time of year...the weather in FL is usually very nice in March...not chilly, but not too hot either!

I love the ideas, and anyone who has any "requests" is more than welcome! I really want to write about what YOU, the readers want to know!

Depression: The myth of "Chemical Imbalance" - Blog Entry

Very interesting blog, Beth. Definately something for people to think about. While I think these drugs DO have their place, they are treatment of symptoms, not a cure. I think the most important step in treatment is finding a doctor who will treat the illness, and treat the PATIENT, in a responsible manner. Therapy needs to go along WITH drugs. I know my doctor will not write a scrip for anti depressants for more than three months, then you have to go back and see him. He's always got suggestions for other things to help as well, non medicinal ways...getting more exercise, eating right, etc. One of my "prescribed" treatments was to start keeping a journal. It's helped really!

"Drug therapy, where valuable in some instances, does not solve the problem"

This is why I LOVE YOU! Thank you so much, for being a RESPONSIBLE professional in this field in a time when so many aren't.

Breastfeeding Mom vs. Toys R Us - Blog Entry

I agree whole heartedly with Valorie. EVEN if a store employee was NOT pro-BF, an employee knows the layout of the store. They would know what the Mother's Room is, and where it is. A Store with a room for BF-ing, feeding, and whatnot, would certainly include that in training. Frankly, unless there is merchandise is in the basement, I doubt an employee would ask her to go there. Most likely customers aren't even allowed in the basement. Her story just sounds fishy...and oh what a surprise that her mom is "high up" in the LLL. Sounds like she's desparately trying to promote the cause, and with this sort of attention, perhaps that could "earn" her a prominent position?

What do you say to a person with cancer? - Blog Entry

Thank you. I wish more people would read this...perhaps it should be handed out to all people lol. My best friend was recently diagnosed, and has tons of people saying all the WRONG things. I'm sure I haven't always said the RIGHT thing, but I try to follow the basic rules you outlined here. To me it's common sense! Apparently, too many people lack that trait. Her ex even asked her if he could CATCH IT. Sad, since he's in the health care industry. Stupid, stupid things people say. Ignorance hurts EVERYONE.

Megan, don't get discouraged!!! I'm no expert....a LOT of what I do is the result of a TON of trial and error. Literally, when you see one good shot that I took, there was probably 100+ that WEREN'T good that were taken at the same time. I have a BIG memory card, and I fill it. That's the great thing about digital...if you can't get it right, delete it, and try again. You've lost no money!

Oh how true! Those sorts of empty promises almost feel worse than the depression itself!
