What I think parents really just don't often "get" is that this is a developmental issue as much as anything else. It's not just about knowing letters and numbers. A test will never tell you what you need to know in terms of being ready. It's much more about development as opposed to a set of hard and fast rules. Cut offs are the most efficient way to make sure kids are placed appropriately. Ask a Baby Blogger: Can I Still Breastfeed if my Baby is Lactose Intolerant - Blog Entry27 May 2009 04:14 PM I'd talk to a pediatrician or an IBCLC before trying that. Your best course of action is to eliminate all dairy from your diet. That is safer than taking something and you can be 100% sure that it won't harm your baby. If you feel like you have to have diary. . .try pumping and dumping or something similar. Good luck. Ask a Baby Blogger: Can a Baby Be Allergic to Breastmilk? - Blog Entry20 Apr 2009 04:19 AM Jenedge--I appreciate your comments. First of all, I am qualified to write this as I have several thousand hours of clinical work helping moms bf. Secondly, if your baby has galactosemia, the diagnosis isn't "allergic to breastmilk" it's galactosemia. You are right--babies with galactosemia cannot drink breastmilk however. . . The condition is exceedingly rare. On top of that your child presented atypically--this is almost always caught in the hospital during newborn screening. Children who have this shouldn't gain weight, should generally present with jaundice. . .and they often have a whole slew of other problems. But again, if your child has this, you're not going to be told that he is allergic to breastmilk.. .you're going to get a definitive diagnosis--which is different. Breastfeeding and Reflux - Blog Entry20 Apr 2009 04:04 AM Jenedge--are you missing that these articles are for breastfed babies? Weight loss is not always an indicator of reflux but you will find doctors very reticent to diagnose reflux without weight loss. That can be frustrating. Ask a Baby Blogger: Lactose Intolerance, Reflux and Breastfeeding - Blog Entry20 Apr 2009 04:02 AM I'm sorry you had to figure this out on your own. All the same, it is extremely, EXTREMELY rare that this happens while breastfeeding which was the point of the article. Furthermore, it is even more rare to have to figure it out on your own. They should've caught it in the hospital. Equal Access Laws for Homeschoolers - Blog Entry31 Mar 2009 07:17 AM I disagree. . .Tim Tebow is awfully talented. I think it's great that he had the opportunity but I doubt that his talent would've gone to waste without the opportunity to play high school football. Another trend, at least in some areas, is that NOT having equal access laws for homeschoolers actually encourages more development in the area of parks and rec. I realize that it depends on your area, but with that said, not allowing homeschoolers and private schooled kids to play on public school sports ends up helping the community by offering more programs. A Baby's Eating Habits - Blog Entry10 Mar 2009 04:40 PM Well. . .that depends. I'm surprised your psychology class on child development didn't cover it. Math Resource Review: National Library of Virtual Manipulatives and Aleks.com - Blog Entry07 Mar 2009 04:10 AM Oh I forgot to add that Andrea, our homeschooling blogger, used Time4Learning. . .I'm sure she'll pop in with a link or two to some of her reviews. Math Resource Review: National Library of Virtual Manipulatives and Aleks.com - Blog Entry07 Mar 2009 04:10 AM I don't have experience with those but I do like artofproblemsolving.com for gifted math. Hope that helps. How the Lady at Trader Joes Cost Me $13 - Blog Entry22 Feb 2009 07:59 PM LOL It happens to the best of us.
