Invalid Reasons to Homeschool - A Public Educator's Opinion - Blog Entry

22 Jun 2008 03:18 AM

I cannot fathom a bad reason to homeschool. I am not in favor of flip flopping. . .I don't think that's good for the child and in fact Andrea has written about the idea of pulling your child out and putting them back in.

But being angry with a broken system is certainly a good reason to pull your child out and homeschool them. And one of many deciding factors in choosing to homeschool was flexibility in schedule. When we started we had newborn twins along with a 2yo, and a 4yo in addition to my 6yo who would've been going to 1st grade. If I had to get her to school I could've but frankly, keeping the family on the same schedule has several bonuses. Thank you for sharing your opinion but I think I'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Labeling Special Education Students - Blog Entry

Does it really though? I mean it seems to me to be a Catch 22. . .and a case of which came first--the chicken or the egg? It's not like 'not labeling' students will cause them not to be separated. . .they stand out from their peers bc of their special needs. I think what is more of a serious issue is mislabeling students. And to that end I can agree that education leads to understanding.

Fox News Blasted for Calling Michelle Obama Degrading Name - Blog Entry

Even I, as a conservative, shun Fox news. It's bad and I wouldn't expect them to even recognize that 'baby mama' was derogatory. I think they're that stupid.

Obama and McCain on the Economy - Blog Entry

I tend to agree. . .although I'm not sure that much at this point can be done about gas and food right now. Gas prices are a whole ball of wax unto themselves. However, I do believe that if a significant portion of the population boycotted the two largest producers of gasoline that would be one place to start. But again, that's a whole ball of wax.

Yeah. . .it's a little creepy. But I'm not so into creepy stuff and even I got kind of into it. Maybe my spouse has started to rub off on me.

Staying on Top of Your Brood in Public - Blog Entry

The buddy system. Each of my older children take a twin and myself and the middle one are paired up. I also have them trained for the subway so we go a certain distance and stop (i.e. up the stairs and stop and wait for everyone, to the metrocard machine and stop at this spot, through the gate and stop, etc.)

Connecticut Schools Close for Heat - Blog Entry

Oh I agree. LOL Don't tell my sil that! ;-) But I'm just not sure why heat (and frankly, it wasn't THAT hot. . .it was 95 or so degrees. . .hot but still) would warrant canceling school. I find it annoying. LOL My poor children will never know what that's like. ;-)

Connecticut Schools Close for Heat - Blog Entry

I'm sorry but I can't help but think that it's because of our climate of lawsuits that schools are closing due to the heat. Heat waves are not a new phenomenon to life. I went to school in heat like this, and we didn't have air conditioning. But we were used to being outside a lot more, our parents were not going to sue the school over something like the weather, and frankly--I think work ethic was better. I survived numerous summers outside in 90 to 100 degree heat.

Here's the thing--my niece is in one of these schools (actually all of my nieces and nephews got out of school early or didn't have school) and so she went to soccer practice early and they practiced longer. . .in the heat.

I don't know why they can't bring some extra water to school and call it a day. Good grief. ;-)
