Should Kindergarten Children Learn to Read and Write? - Blog Entry

Woops Karri! I responded to the first comment without reading your blog but in light of reading it I'll say this: I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that it would be sad if you were pushing your students to the point of them not wanting to read or write. ;-) You absolutely should be proud. . .but I still say that some kids are not ready at 5 to be reading yet. If they are. . .then you are right to give them more and definitely them reading is a sign of your great job as a teacher! (LOL--Ironically this ties into our whole other discussion on delaying kindergarten entrance and moving up the birth dates. . .)

Should Kindergarten Children Learn to Read and Write? - Blog Entry

Having an entire classroom full of 5 year olds reading, could be detrimental and is extremely unrealistic. Reading is developmental and there are numerous kids who simply aren't ready at that age. While I agree that they are eager to learn and I agree that a love of reading is to be encouraged--I strongly disagree that you encourage a love of reading by teaching kids how to read. I think they develop a love for learning and reading by being read to, and by being exposed to rich learning experiences that challenge their thinking. For those who are ready, it's great and absolutely a kindergarten classroom should be designed to meet the needs of students who are ready. But nothing leads to disillusionmnet and frustration faster for a child than being pushed where he developmentally cannot go.

I really liked this film actually. I totally get what you're saying about the realism of it. . .I think one night stands are hard to swallow however they're served. (At least for me.) On the other hand, I think that part of the "magic" of the movie is this connection through music that the 3 seem to share. I have to say I thought the score was incredibly well done and I agree. . .the kid was phenomenal.

Well that's only true if your twins were born early. Mine were full term. . .born at 40 weeks exactly so the first year was. . .exhausting!

Make Yourself a Priority - Blog Entry

Interesting article. I still agree with Dale. . .I don't think that putting yourself as your top priority is Biblical. (Of course not everyone has to agree with my ideals. . .that's fine too. ;-)) I think that we get so much more when we put others before ourselves and that in turn refreshes us. I think the trick is not to neglect yourself.

Frankly, I think we live in a society where people really have no difficulty putting themselves first. Can you imagine what life might be like if we truly put others before ourselves in all things?

Yes. . .I will get to that. I guess it's impossible to completely eliminate bias. Since I think the 4th has as much a chance of being elected president as a pig growing wings and flying I've chosen to focus on the "major candidates" first and to focus on him last along with his parties ideals. Interestingly, I think a lot of people might find they identify with those ideals.
