On the Great Curriculum Hunt - Blog Entry

I am familiar with the idea. I am not convinced it's the majority. . .but I do believe that there are a lot. I think I would tend to split hsers into two groups. . .those who homeschool for dogmatic reasons (and there I would lump together both those secular homeschoolers who are opposed to the institutionalization of children through ps and those who hs for religious beliefs) and then those who are 'accidental homeschoolers'. I'll have to see if Andrea wrote about this. . .thanks for the blog topic idea! ;-) I'll have to think on this one a little more.

Thanks for your comments. In the days to come I will be writing more on the upsides and downfalls of many philosophies of homeschooling.

More Regulations Are Not the Answer!!! - Blog Entry

17 Jan 2008 05:49 AM

I have to say I agree. IF it would help prevent cases of abuse. . .I would be all for more regulation. But I don't think it would. Most of the time in these stories you'll find that the kids were in the system and somehow slipped through the cracks. I would be in favor of something that says I have to prove I take my child to the pediatrician as one is supposed to. It seems like if there were going to be a regulation to do more to prevent child abuse w/o infringing on the rights of homeschoolers--that would be it.

Early Education on the Rise - Blog Entry

I really think that it's better if children stay at home when they are that young. When that's not possible. . .a good preschool is essential and in that sense, I'm in favor of free preschool. I would rather see kids at preschool than at a babysitter's watching television. However, in general, home can be a much more productive place to be at that age. And no, it would not be better for a parent to work with an educator. . .parents are the true educators of their children.

Babies in the News: The Non-Twin Twins - Blog Entry

15 Jan 2008 05:52 AM

I know. . .isn't this just about the oddest think you've ever seen? Except for the one where they were twins with two fathers. . .that's even weirder I think. ;-)

Oh and Kara yes, they were both a little early. The first one was technically 2 weeks early which made the second one 5 weeks early. The second one was 4lbs. something. They were born via c/s (I assume--they were 1 minute apart) and so I assume it was an early c/s to avoid some complication in the mother. The article didn't go into detail but said the pregnancy was quite complicated. But both babies are fine now. ;-)

Gotta agree. What dumbness. Of course I'm still mad at the mom who lied for the tickets. That's REAL dishonesty.

Educational Neglect: What you Should Know - Blog Entry

13 Jan 2008 04:52 PM

I certainly don't condone anyone who says they are homeschooling and then doesn't do anything with their child. However, I could take every argument you've made and point to the public school system as well. In fact, a court recently made a ruling saying that the "public school system has no obligation to educate." That's verbatim.

So I ask you this: what about the children. . .and thousands of them, that are slipping through the cracks in the public school system? What are we doing about those kids? Testing that frequently is not only ridiculous, it's unnecessary and would be a serious waste of resources that could otherwise go to helping kids who are actually slipping through the cracks.

You're welcome to come back and discuss the issue. . .but please, do some research first. States don't have laws that protect homeschoolers. They have educational laws. . .and CPS on occassion harasses families who homeschool. Not without a fight will someone take away my right to educate MY children bc my neighbor is a bad parent.

My mother in law's pot roast is linked above if you click where it says mother in law's pot roast. It was a post on 5 of my favorite crock pot recipes. I have written several crock pot recipes. . .I think if you search crock pot or slow cooker they would come up. If you're looking for something specific. . .like a certain type of meat or something, let me know.
