The way the news story was first read last night. . .the newscaster was a little vague and I caught the last part of the story. . .a few words here and there. . .bronx. . .headed west. . . (We live about 5 miles directly west of the Bronx Zoo!)

Then he came on a couple minutes later and apologized. Apparently his mic wasn't working properly or something so he repeated the whole thing. . .we all got a good chuckle at my confusion!!! ;-)

Sad, sad, sad. . .especially the story in China.

I do usually do a review for the restaurants I go to! LOL We don't eat out very much. But in 2008 I think we're going to try to systematically hit more restaurants in NYC.

The tips was 18% mandatory since we are a party of 8! (I think the gratuity is automatically included in parties of 5 or more.) Then they have a bucket of tips that they pass around and we put a few dollars in there too. They are after all, struggling actors and actresses. ;-)

5 Reasons NOT to Put Cereal in Your Baby's Bottle - Blog Entry

21 Dec 2007 05:09 AM

This a report by consumer reports: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/babies-kids/child-safety/food/choking/food-choking-hazards-and-children-1-07/overview/0701_choking-hazards.htm

Although it's not specifically about cereal in a baby's bottle, it does mention it as a choking hazard. So I'll pose the same question, If pediatricians know that cereal in a bottle is a potential choking hazard, why would they still recommend it?

If you do your research. . .you'll find that most pediatricians are not following current guidelines on when to start solids. WHO, UNICEF and the AAP currently recommend no solid food until at least 6 mos. UNICEF just did a big study on why you should wait even longer if you're bfing. Yet, when you talk to moms, pediatricians are still telling patients 4 mos and sometimes earlier. Not all doctors are good ones though and I would suggest that one who tells someone to put cereal in the bottle (in the absence of reflux) is NOT a good pediatrician and is not current on research.

Rice cereal is empty calories. It's the equivalent of feeding your baby white bread. It's true that it gets baby used to texture but if you wait to start solids until they actually are ready. . .there's no need for that.

As far as allergies from rice cereal. . .technically what happens is called "leaky gut". . .and it's associated with allergies. There has been a sigificant and steady rise in serious allergies since formula was introduced. Without going into a lot of detail here, some suggest that "leaky gut" is a prominent connection btwn serious food allergies in children. So yes, food allergies from rice cereal. Do your research. . .
