My five year old and I just say him recently. This was our second time. He puts on a great live performance. Have You Considered Becoming a Room Mom? - Blog Entry01 Sep 2006 04:50 PM I don't want to be the room mother but I want to be the mother the room mother knows she can count on when she needs something done. The main reason is I have a tendency to over committ to things and don't want to take on more than I can handle and not be able to do a good job. I plan to go on all the field trips and help with the parties, the school plays and so on I just don't want to be in charge. Which is funny since people tell me I'm bossy! Right now I'm really busy with my writing and it can take up a lot of my time when I am doing reseach. Like today it took me about three hours of slogging through The History of Numbers, this really longggggg academic math book to get information about a concept that I have to be able to explain in 600 words to a 8-12 year olds! I literally had to walk down the block to clear my head. Sometimes that how it goes and if I have to be involved in school to the extent that I have to do a lot of planning and coordinating I don't think I will have the time. Boobah - Blog Entry01 Sep 2006 07:12 AM I watched the show when it first premiered and I didn't get it either. We never watched it again. Hurricane Katrina Survivors Still Getting Support One Year Later - Blog Entry28 Aug 2006 08:10 PM I'm glad to hear about all of the fundraising going on but as a Hurricane Katrina survivor, I can tell you the majority of the survivors are not getting much assistance. Many are still waiting for insurance settlements or help from Fema. The state of Louisiana supposedly has grant money available but we have been waiting and waiting and waiting. I'm not saying people should not give to the Red Cross or other agencies but a lot of your giving goes to administrative costs or into some big black hole. And also please note that unless you specifically say you want your money to go to a certain disaster, the money goes to the agency and can be used for future tragedies. All told I've received less than 30k to rebuild a house worth about 90k plus replace all of my belongings. Off To Kindergarten - Blog Entry21 Aug 2006 11:07 AM Teresa, We both have Tylers! Mine started kindergarten last week and he is loving it. I am sooooo excited because they are going to test him for the gifted class. One funny thing though, he does not want me to kiss him good-bye in front of his class (they stand in the hall until the second bell rings) he says it is "embarrasing". He says I can kiss him when we get out the car! I can't believe that little booger. This morning we shook hands. Then he realized that was silly and went ahead and kissed me. Why Some Older Parents Are Hesitant to Discipline - Blog Entry20 Aug 2006 07:57 PM John, I said "some" older parents not all. There are certainly younger parents who hesitate to discipline and some older parents who think nothing of it. And I certainly don't feel I am being discriminatory or biased against older parents, a group that I belong to and am proud of the fact. As an older, single parent with one child I spend a lot of time with him and it is hard sometimes for me, to switch from the playmate to the parent role and I am would venture that there are other parents who feel the same. But again not all older parents. The Joys of Single Parenting - Blog Entry16 Aug 2006 11:09 AM Being a single parent of an only child also makes that parent-child bond stronger. Do Parents Support School Uniforms? - Blog Entry13 Aug 2006 08:19 PM I just finished ironing my son's uniforms! He starts kindergarten Tuesday and I am all for them. I think it elimates a lot of problems with kids wanting to have the "latest". Also, you save a lot of money, in the end. Also the little ones look so cute in them! What Kindergartners Need To Learn - Blog Entry11 Aug 2006 09:17 AM My son starts kindergarten August 15th and he is soooo excited. He's been home with me most of his life. Last year we started with the pre-k workbooks and he went through them so fast I moved up to the kindergarten and first grade one. The book by Core that you mentioned is great I checked it out of the library. Barron's also has a really good workbook (they have them for all grade levels starting with kindergarten). It has a ton of activities to reinforce each concept and at the back they offer a test. Personalized Story - One Line per Day - Blog Entry02 Aug 2006 07:37 PM Sherry, My son just finished a week-long program at the school he will attend soon. It's a program to transition kids to Kindergarten if they have not attended preschool. On the first day they gave them a book bag with a bunch of stuff in it and one of the things was a picture journal. He's "writing" a story in pictures. Each day he has to add another page to it. He loves it. We, the parents, are supposed to continue with it each day. He's definitely having fun and has come up with some good drawings and so far an interesting story. |
