Risk of Autism Increases When Mom is Obese

A study that was recently published in the journal “Pediatrics” suggest that mothers who are obese are more likely to have a child with autism, or with another type of developmental problem. Moms who have diabetes have the same risk. The implication is that obesity and diabetes are affecting early brain development. There has been a lot of research done in an attempt to discover the causes of autism. I’ve lost track of the wide variety of things that are said to be the cause of autism, or that are found to increase the risk of it. Perhaps, one day, … Continue reading

A Few More Studies About the Causes of Autism

It seems to me that there is a constant stream of news articles regarding studies that have found the cause of autism. I’ve heard so many different ideas about the cause of autism that I am having trouble figuring out which one is correct. This week, there are two more studies that may, or may not, have found the cause of autism. Right now, it seems that the only thing that is known for certain is that immunizations do not cause autism. There have been a plethora of other studies that pin the cause of autism on a wide variety … Continue reading

Connecting Anti-depressants and Autism

You likely heard about the belief that immunizations cause Autism, and if you looked into it at all you would know that the study has been de-bunked and there is no proven connection between the two. While there are still many believers, most scientists have moved on to discover what exactly causes Autism. The general agreement in the scientific community is that there are genetics at play, but since science has been unable to account for a specific genetic factor, they are also searching for environmental links to Autism that may help answer some questions. I personally find the quest … Continue reading

Could Babies Conceived In Winter Have Higher Risk of Autism?

A study done in California seems to reveal a correlation between the time of year that a baby was conceived and the risk of being born with autism. Add this to the growing list of things that researchers are pointing to as a cause of autism. Before you try and plan out your pregnancy to avoid having a child who is on the autism spectrum, there are some things that you need to understand. This is the second study I have read about that makes a connection between when a child is conceived, or when a child is born, and … Continue reading

UTIs and Your Shoes

What makes a person susceptible to a urinary tract infection? Many times, there is no obvious reason for a UTI. A urinary passage may be partially blocked, or bacteria may spread from the lower bowel or from the vagina during intercourse. Pregnant women have a higher risk of developing a urinary tract infection, thanks to hormonal and physical changes. One other factor? Your shoes. If you wear high heels frequently, you could be putting yourself at risk for a urinary tract infection! Here’s why: wearing high heels can make your pelvis tilt forward and your back curve outwards. This can … Continue reading

Celebrity Mom Speaks Out About Autistic Son

The term “shrinking violet” has never been used to describe actress Jenny McCarthy… and that may be a good thing. If nothing else it certainly helps when she wants to get her message across. These days it’s not just how McCarthy is getting her message across, but rather, the subject matter itself that’s making headlines. This morning the actress and former Playboy playmate revealed on ABC’s “The View” (during her stint as a guest co-host) that she is the mother of an autistic son. “I did want to acknowledge and confirm the fact that my son does, indeed, have an … Continue reading

Can Infertility Treatments Cause Autism?

As if worrying about getting pregnant isn’t enough, a new study suggests that infertility treatments may put children at an increased risk for autism. A study done at the University of California showed a four times greater instance of autism in women who had taken fertility drugs to get pregnant. Since I am a former infertility patient, this study caught my attention right away. I was injected with fertility drugs to conceive our first child. I’ll admit that I was so intent on having a baby that I didn’t know, or care, what was in the drugs. I just wanted … Continue reading

Early Test for Autism

Scientists are moving closer to developing a blood test to detect autism early in life—possibly even at birth. Autism is often not diagnosed until a child is three to four years of age, when the characteristic behavior pattern becomes more apparent. Identifying the condition earlier creates an opportunity for researchers to better understand the condition, but also encourages the development of treatments that might reduce the severity of the symptoms. In time, it is hoped that biomarkers for the condition will be developed for use during pregnancy, although this aspect of the research is still in the pipeline. Meanwhile, the … Continue reading

How the Candidates Compare on Medicaid – Romney/Ryan

The first debate of the 2012 Presidential Election has happened, and is done. It is very important that everyone become an informed voter, and understand exactly how each candidate stands on important issues. Here is one of two blogs that will tell you what each side’s plans are for Medicaid. There seems to be a whole lot of misinformation being spread around about what each of the two candidates intends to do if elected, or re-elected, as President of the United States. This is the Insurance Blog, so this time I am going to focus on Medicaid. Here is what … Continue reading
