Vermont Genealogy Resources

Welcome to VermontThe nickname for the state of Vermont is “The Green Mountain State”. This explains why the state’s Medicaid program is called Green Mountain Care! Are you looking for information about your ancestors who once lived in Vermont? If so, then take a minute to explore the following Vermont genealogy resources. They are helpful, and many are free to use.

Ancestry.com has a page that is filled with links to all of their collections of Vermont records. In order to access the majority of these records, you will need to have an Ancestry.com membership. Sometimes, a collection may be offered for free. Return to their page often. Ancestry.com does a great job of making it clear when a collection is new, has been updated, or is currently being offered for free access.

FamilySearch has a Wiki page that is about the state of Vermont. You can find a link to more FamilySearch Wiki pages that are about each individual county in the state. There are also links to more information about major repositories of Vermont records. Towards the bottom of the page you will find a series of links to FamilySearch Wiki pages about specific FamilySearch Vermont collections.

Facebook has a Community Page for FamilySearch Vermont Genealogy Research. This is a great resource for genealogists who want to connect with other genealogists who are working on Vermont research right now. This is also a good place to find links to FamilySearch collections of Vermont records.

GeneaLinks has a search engine at the top of its page. Put the first and last name of your ancestor into it. Next, select which type of record you want to search through. Choose from: vital, birth, death, marriage, divorce, or “Genealogy”. GeneaLinks also has helpful information for genealogists who are new to Vermont genealogy. Did you know that vital records in Vermont are considered to be public domain? There are not restrictions on getting copies of them.

Interment.net has cemetery records online. Start by putting your ancestor’s first and last name into the search engine on their page. Or, you can start by selecting a county in Vermont to search through. If there is a link, it indicates that Interment.net has information about records from cemeteries within that county. Sorry, Orleans county doesn’t have a link attached.

Cyndi’s List is probably the most comprehensive collection of links to online genealogy resources. If it exists on the internet, Cyndi’s List might have a link to it! They have a page called “United States – Vermont”. Start by selecting a category to search through. Choose from: “Birth, Marriage, Death”, “Census”, “Counties”, “Military”, “Newspapers”, and more!
