While we wholeheartedly endorse proper spanking, it doesn't always work with a special child. I remember the first real rebellion from my then 7 year old. I spanked him appropriately. He turned around to me and said calmly, "Hmm, that kind of hurt" like it was "Hmm, looks like rain." LOL. For him, holding was a good technique when he was young. The rest of them would've turned around and hugged me :-D. My favorite one for him is writing. He hates to write sentences, so it's a good deterrent. Ask a Baby Blogger: Should I Wake My Baby to Breastfeed? - Blog Entry26 Jan 2007 05:06 PM How awful, Valerie! Mine settled in quickly. The nursery started them on 3 hour schedules, and we continued it. The biggest change was feeding them when they woke up, and putting them to bed when they were cranky. Made for happy babies *s*. Yes, whatever works for each family, and for each baby! They're all different, and every family is different. When You Want To Hit A Bully Follow-up - Blog Entry26 Jan 2007 02:51 PM Teresa, if my sons were being bullied, I'd expect them to fight back and defend themselves. A true bully wants the weakest target because he's a coward inside. When our neighborhood bully started throwing rocks (big ones) at our children, I stepped in and talked to the parents. They promised to deal with it, but of course didn't. It finally escalated to the point where I told them that involving the authorities would be my next course of action. Hated to do that with a neighbor (especially since we're homeschooling!), but it was getting dangerous. Daniel (the problem child) is 9. If it's not stopped now, at 15 we would've been in real trouble. I Have to Meet with My Child's Teacher about Possible Retention - Blog Entry26 Jan 2007 12:45 PM Dawn, my oldest son didn't read AT ALL until 5th grade. He just didn't get it. It was a big shock since his old year older sister read at four, and his one year younger brother was reading on a college level. He's a chess champion and math whiz. His brain just didn't work that way. When he did start reading, it took less than four months to catch up to grade level. He's still a math-oriented child; that won't change. I can't imagine attaching the stigma of being held back simply because a child wasn't ready. My little brother was held back in first grade, and never, ever felt as smart as the rest of us -- even though he's a computer programmer now and financially more successful than any of us. Children grow at their own rates. Amtrak Schools on Trains Program Open to Homeschoolers - Blog Entry26 Jan 2007 11:50 AM They didn't require any ID from us. You have to give them the names in advance because of security. But our homeschool "group" is actually an online Yahoo group where homeschoolers throughout the county share information. We're really thirty different local groups meeting online. They don't ask. I don't think they really care, as long as the children are well-supervised. We've has such fun with this, and would like to see Amtrak extend it throughout the country. Who's the Boss at Your House? - Blog Entry26 Jan 2007 11:34 AM dh is definitely the boss here. I like to say that he's the president of our family, but I'm the CEO ;-). Is It Okay For Kids To Call Their Parents By Their First Name? - Blog Entry26 Jan 2007 11:33 AM Kori, we're northwesterners, too. Do you live on the I-5 corridor? We would never use Ms. unless someone has specifically asked to be addressed that way. A lot of women consider it offensive. Different circles, I guess. Valorie, I completely agree. The title doesn't have to be Mr. or Mrs. Any title shows respect. The One-Bite Rule For Picky Eaters - Blog Entry26 Jan 2007 11:26 AM We call it a "No Thank You" serving :-). "Elisha, would you like some spinach?" "No thank you." Then it's a mini-scoop. Has been working so far. Cheerios Racing - Pay Me!
