Wonderful post, Tristi. What a terrible recommendation -- ESPECIALLY if the gift giver is not the parent.

Some other authors my teens love are G.A. Henty, Martha Finley, and Little Bear Wheeler.

The parallel between the civil rights movements and the homosexual community is a poor one. People don't decide whether to practice "being black". Whether a homosexual has a choice whether to FEEL attraction to a member of the same sex is debatable, but whether a person has the choice to ACT upon those feelings is not. The majority of the nation reports itself as subscribing to religions where homosexuality is abhorred (Judaism, Christianity, Islam). How then does highlighting a person's homosexuality embrace common values?

Ouch! Okay, I might complain about living in a state whose governor thieved her way into office, but I'm counting my blessings on the homeschool law. Ours requires one affadavit per year (a simple one page one), plus a test or assessment, then leaves everything else up to the parents. We don't have to track at ALL, and the master teacher who does our assessment every year is a close family friend who knows what's going on in the children's lives. I hadn't considered the heavily regulated states when replying :-X. Have you used the Homeschool Tracker? I have a lot of friends who swear by it for record-keeping.

Do you think that child who is having a (temporary) failure to thrive will do better institutionalized? I can't conceive of ANY situation that would have me send them to government school.

Agreed! And "catch up"? Isn't that a condiment? ;-) We homeschool year round and take off whenever life's curveballs get thrown, or when we just feel like a break. It doesn't mean they're not learning.
