Field Trip Tips

Check with your destination to see if they have free or discounted days. I'm always surprised how many museums and attractions have freebies :-)

Yes or No? Answer These Frugal Questions

09 Oct 2008 11:09 AM

A lot of these are really rude (and some are fraud)! When my sister was waitressing, she had a cheap guy who would always do the lemonade thing. He never left a tip either. She finally charged him one day for a side of fruit. He, of course, complained and the manager took it off, but he never sat in her section again.

We usually DO skip a meal before going to a buffet. I guess I've never considered that miserly. It runs about ~$70 for all of us to go to Sweet Tomatoes (that's with a coupon and discount). That had better cover lunch AND dinner! *s*

Front Loading Washing Machines Promote Mold

09 Oct 2008 11:01 AM

I love my front-loader! But, yes, here in WA everything grows mold unless you're really, really diligent. The HE detergent costs about 40% more than the generic. We don't use it. I use perfume-free, color-free detergent, and I use borax on anything that is smelly. I think the regular use of borax probably keeps the mold down, but I also leave the door open on those rare occasions it's not running :-). The water and energy savings are worth any extra trouble.

The Danger of MegaSchools

09 Oct 2008 10:55 AM

Our mega-high school has a student ratio of 20-1 --- and the city asked for almost $200 million last year to build a new one. We're just not that big. The tax burden was going to be huge, and thankfully it failed. They'll push every election until it passes :-(.

I think the problem is not necessarily with the class size, but with the lack of authority the teachers have to control a larger class. Teachers are given a lot of RESPONSIBILITY, but their hands are often tied to carry that out. If you have a class of 20 with two troublemakers, that's more difficult than a class of 40 with one. If we give teachers some autonomy and personal discretion to deal with the errant few, their class sizes shouldn't matter very much.

Spend Less on Home Heating 2

And the easiest way -- put on socks! I'm not heartless, but I don't want to hear a request to turn on the heater unless they have socks and a sweater on and are still cold.

The Blessing of Prayer

09 Oct 2008 10:42 AM

It really is important! I'm so thankful for the prayer warriors in my life.

Got this in my email this morning: https://www.tefilot.org -- it's actually paying people to pray for you. What do you think about that?

Joy in the Heart

We've always loved the Little House series, both the books and the shows. I don't remember that one. Now I'm going to have to go an look it up :-). Wholesome tv. Wish we still had it!
