Heartwarming Tales from Across the Web

Guide dogs for other dogs aren’t entirely uncommon Months ago I posted about the best animals on the internet, rounding up the latest of the funniest or cutest animal stories I’d seen. Today I want to share two of the most heartwarming stories about dogs I saw in October. MSNBC Today has the first story. Erica Daniel specializes in fostering the dogs that really need help, either for behavioral or health issues. She’s used to not giving up, to pouring everything she can into healing these dogs so that they’re ready to go into homes. This summer she found herself … Continue reading

A Warning To Potential Job Seekers

I have two cousins enrolled in nearby colleges, both are excellent students who hold down part time jobs in addition to carrying full academic loads. They also spend quite a bit of down time on the Internet–one has even contributed Spring Break photos to a MySpace page. Sounds innocent enough, but I don’t think it is a coincidence that recently both received school-wide warnings from their respective universities warning all students about what they post online, and how it could impact future job searches. I read the form letter the schools issued. It cited a new study that found employers … Continue reading

“Boy Meets World” Sequel to Air on Disney Channel

Heads up, children of the 90s: according to Entertainment Weekly, the Disney Channel is planning a “Boy Meets World” sequel. The teen sitcom, which aired in the 1990s as part of ABC’S “TGIF” Friday night lineup, starred Ben Savage as Cory Matthews, a kid growing up in suburban Philadelphia. I was a kid growing up in suburban Philadelphia, just a bit younger than Cory. Of all the childhood shows that had a strong influence on my development, “Boy Meets World” wasn’t one of them. But it’s a show that I enjoyed and watched faithfully from beginning to end, so the … Continue reading

The Voucher System in Georgia has Problems

There has been an ongoing struggle regarding the school voucher system in Georgia. The difficulty seems to be figuring out how to meet the needs of students who have special needs while keeping the budgets of the public schools in balance. Each state gets to decide, individually, what it wants to do regarding school vouchers. As far as I am aware, there isn’t a federal law that decides this for all states, across the board. This allows each state to create a program that is tailor made to fit best with the needs, and the budget, of their state. It … Continue reading

You’ve Gotta Have Friends

I learned a lot about support over the weekend. We held our annual walk to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in hopes of finding a cure for our daughter, Maggie. Our team, Miles for Maggie, showed up ready to go and they had raised over $8,000. It was emotional and heartwarming and I left the walk feeling warm and fuzzy. That’s what a support network of family and friends will do to you. It’s not just about their willingness to raise money, it’s about the effort they put in and the time they give to be there with … Continue reading

Sexual Assault: The Perpetrator, the Victim and the Representative of Justice

In all cases of sexual assault, there is the perpetrator and the victim. In some cases, there is an introduction of a third party: the representative of justice. The latter only comes into the picture when the victim reports the crime, which according to available statistics, is in the minority. This means that most crimes of a sexual nature go unreported. This situation clearly is not good, but it gets worse. Often there is an expectation by the victim that, if they report the crime, justice will be done. This belief, while reasonable, is sadly not what the justice system … Continue reading

Are You Too PC to Hug?

Remember those corny old cards, bookmarks and bumper stickers that proclaimed “Hugs Are Healing”? Well, no surprises for guessing that the authors were correct. Researchers at the UK’s Manchester Metropolitan University in England have concluded what we all suspected: hugs are healing. But scientists warn we are caught in an epidemic of a non-hugging culture where we are either too time-poor to hug, or political correctness gets in the way. This is a sad but true reflection of our times. Teachers are no longer permitted to touch, much less hug, their infant charges, who might benefit from having a hug … Continue reading

Pregnant Buddies

I would love it if I could time my next pregnancy with my sister’s first. There is just something so special about being pregnant at the same time as a close friend or a sister. I tried timing my first pregnancy with a couple different friends, but ended up sandwiched in between their due dates. As most women know, there’s only so much planning you can do when it comes to picking a due date. Babies are born when they are meant to be born, regardless of our efforts to synchronize their birthdays with cousins or friends’ babies. Still, there … Continue reading

More Summertime Savings

One of the great things about summer is that Fall is the time when many new products are introduced. That means that retailers want to clear space for the new stuff, and lower the prices on those big ticket items you’ve been wanting but could not afford. Computer sales have fallen in the past quarter, due to the economic problems of many consumers. Let’s watch out for great sales – just be sure when buying a computer that you are buying what you need, instead of settling for less. New computers are due to hit the market soon, and the … Continue reading

Snow End in Site

Overnight and in the early morning, we got hit with a few fluffy gentle inches of snow. I decided to get the shovel and brush out and take care of the long driveway, the car and the steps, cleaning them up. Our house is situated downhill, and it is a minivan, which means that even with a little snow, it isn’t getting up the hill of the driveway. So, even though I am fighting a fever, a sore throat, aches and chills, I thought it was in our best interest to get it cleared. I did a combination technique of … Continue reading
