When the Weather Is Frightful

“Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful.  And since we’ve no place to go, let it snow!  Let it snow!  Let it snow!”  Hmmm…maybe I should rewrite this Christmas carol.  How about “And since we’ve no place to go, let us exercise!  Let us exercise!  Let us exercise!”

I know.  It doesn’t have a nice ring to it.  Plus who wants to exercise inside their cozy house when there are so many other enjoyable activities to do?  Most of us would rather curl up in front of the fireplace with a good book, sip on some hot chocolate or watch a movie with family.

Not that there is anything wrong with these things.  But if you are stuck inside because the weather outside is frightful, at least get in some exercise.

It can be difficult to remain active during the colder months.  And with the holidays, forget it.  Most of us would rather indulge and set goals for the New Year.

But you can still stay fit during the holiday season, at least to some degree.  And by starting to do a little something now, it will make sticking to a fitness program much easier come January 1, 2013.

However, don’t dismiss the possibility of going outside in the cold weather and getting in some exercise at the same time.  In fact, there are many fun activities you can do outdoors that won’t necessarily feel like exercise.

Sledding is one, especially making that trek back up the hill.  Or how about some ice skating or skiing?  Put on some thermal clothing, bundle up and take a walk in the fresh fallen snow.

The winter season doesn’t mean you have to be stuck indoors.  But even if you are, take time to walk on the treadmill or pop in a workout video.
