Losing our teacher

My oldest's Kindergarten teacher is leaving school to tend to a serious health issue. She's put it off for some time, but with the recovery time being three months, she felt it best to miss June rather than September. My wife is heartbroken. She loves this teacher, and the teacher thinks our girl is great, too. It's been a great year for her; she thrived in Mrs. M's class. I'm sure she'll be fine these last five weeks. The teacher who will finish is a recent retiree from the same program for "gifted" children, and someone who has subbed for Mrs. M before. I don't know how smooth the transition will be, but I think we'll be okay. Our big question: do we tell her over the weekend, or do we wait for the teacher to tell them? My inclination is to tell her on Sunday, so that she might be a little prepared. I think she will be sad, and maybe worried for the teacher, but I think she wil adjust to the new teacher. They are in a routine where they know what to do, and the new teacher will stick to the plans the other teacher had. I'm more concerned about my wife! She will not likely write the cute little notes telling Mrs. M. how much she liked this or that homework assignment, not knowing this sub teacher. She wil miss the feedback, and I'm sure the year will not feel complete without Mrs. M. Well, I hope that my girl can help her mother get through this!
