Epcot Flower & Garden Festival Kicks Off This Week

This week the Epcot International Flower Garden Festival officially opens.  It’s one of Epcot’s longest events, in the length of time it’s going on at the park.  So from year to year it might not seem like a lot changes.  This year, though, it’s got something special up its sleeve. One of Disney’s big films of the year is “Oz: The Great & Powerful,” which tells the story of how a man from the American Midwest became the wonderful, terrible Wizard of Oz.  It opens on March 8, two days after the kickoff of the Flower & Garden Festival, and … Continue reading

Business Idea – Gardener

One example of a hobby that could translate into a home – based business is gardening. Many people enjoy tending to their own large or small flower or vegetable gardens at home. Some people like the way that gardens look but do not have the time or the desire to care for a garden of their own. These people may want to hire a gardener to plant one or more gardens in their yard and keep them maintained throughout the growing season. Being a gardener is slightly different than operating a lawn care or landscaping business. In fact, it involves … Continue reading

Beeloved Bees: Growing Bee Food in Your Garden

If you’ve taken the leap and decided to enjoy bees rather than fear them, then you’ll want to find ways to invite these buzzy little pollinators into your garden. The main reasons that bees aren’t doing so well is a lack of suitable, diverse food sources, the threat of pesticides, and a lack of habitat. You can help with both problems, simply by planting plants and adding bee homes to your yard. Let’s address the food sources first. Bees visit flowers to gather nectar, and they also collect pollen as they go. They move this pollen from flower to flower … Continue reading

Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival 2012

Disney fans have one big sign for the coming of spring, and it has nothing to do with a certain ceremonial groundhog. Nope, it’s something much more floral. Once the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival has kicked off, we know that spring is coming. Of course this is a bit of a cheat; as I said last year, the festival takes place in Orlando. That means it’s nice and warm for them year round. Oh, I know that some Orlando residents complain of the chilly 50-degree weather they sometimes get in the winter, but the rest of us living … Continue reading

My Yard Goes Disney

Many of my friends are addicted to Home and Garden Television, or HG-TV. I don’t know if any of them are Disney fans, and that’s a shame. Disney website Stitch Kingdom reveals that beginning on June 6, HG-TV will air the new show “My Yard Goes Disney.” For the show Orlando-area families can sign up in hopes to win an outdoor makeover for their home by Disney designers. Yard decor will be inspired by Walt Disney World and the theme of “family memories.” That last bit clicked in my mind. It wouldn’t be too difficult to extrapolate why Disney might … Continue reading

Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival

While some of us are still shivering in the cold, being blown about by frosty winds, or sighing glumly at the piles of snow in our yard, spring is in full swing in Orlando. Yup, it’s that time again; Wednesday is the kickoff of the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. I have multiple family members that for whom coming to see fanciful hedges trimmed to resemble and adorned with flowers to represent multi-color Disney characters would be enough of a reason to visit Epcot this spring. The living rainbows sure to be on display at Bambi’s Magnificent Butterfly Garden … Continue reading

A Wet Part of the Garden

It is summer here and it has hit with a vengeance. We haven’t had rain in weeks, and any wet places in our garden have long since dried up. However, I know that come September, the rain will begin again and the garden will be oh-so-muddy in places. We have a small garden, but the contours of the land still influence it, and sometimes some parts of the garden become a mud hole. If you have similar damp places in your garden, how can you recreate them into a beautiful part of your garden? If you really dislike the damp … Continue reading

Gardening In Layers

Sometimes, I can spend hours in our garden. Ok, it’s not huge, really. It’s mere meters by meters, not acres by acres. However, it seems like the hours just go by when I’m out there. There are many, many plants and garden structures in my garden, and it’s a postage stamp. I garden in layers, and that is how we can fit so much into the garden. What does this look like? Well, if you were to step into my garden this morning, you’d see a fence made out of old metal headboards. I like my funky decorations. On this … Continue reading

Would You Share Your Garden?

I’m a great advocate of yard sharing. In the suburban neighborhood where I live, most houses have large yards. Most of these yards are covered in grass and a few selected shrubs, annuals, and the occasional tree. In the spring and summer, people go out and dedicatedly mow this grass, remove the clippings, and fertilize what is left. It seems to be a form of madness to me, but then again I have always been more partial to moss and vegetables than to lawns. Our family lives in a townhouse. Our townhouse has the typical postage-stamp sized garden. On the … Continue reading
