Family Yoga Classes

Family yoga classes are a fun way for the whole family to experience yoga. There are many benefits gained from the practice of yoga and adults aren’t the only ones who can benefit from the health benefits and calming effects of yoga. A family yoga class is different than your typical class designed for adults. There won’t be much meditation or complicated poses or sequences. These classes tend to be child focused and fun. Often, instructors use stories or songs that contain yoga poses as characters to teach asanas to children. The stories and music are designed to capture and … Continue reading

Family Fun in the Snow

It’s Thanksgiving and we already have snow on the ground. I suppose that should come as no surprise considering we live in Wisconsin. Still, I was kind of hoping that Mother Nature would wait until at least December 1st before pelting us with the white stuff. Of course, the thousands of snow lovers who eagerly await the first flake of the season do not share my opinion. They are the ones the Appalachian Mountain Club is welcoming with open arms this season. In fact, this year the club is extending its new family weekend series through the winter with programs … Continue reading

My Family Meltdown at Family Yoga

I thought I would share my teaching struggle with other parents who teach their children. Although, I’m not usually teaching my child because he goes to public school, I did have him in the Family Yoga class that I taught yesterday. I’ll start by saying that I truly respect parents who can patiently teach, coach or lead a group of kids that includes one of their own. If anyone knows what the behavioral meltdown that occurs in this situation is called, I would love to know. Something about being a yoga teacher makes me superimpose this idea that I’m supposed … Continue reading

The idea behind holism goes back to ancient civilizations in Egypt and Greece; you need to nurture the mind, body, and spirit, not just treat symptoms as they appear. Here are five things you can do that are good for your whole self: mind, body, and spirit. Take your time in … Continue reading

Getting Fit With Video Games

The newest concept in getting fit is with video games and it appears to be a success. Play Time Is Healthy For Everyone

Play time doesn’t mean a waste of time. Not at all! Play time can help your family (young and old) improve flexibility, build strength, and learn healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Try these family activities: A family bike ride. One of my favorite memories of summer is hopping on my bike with my dad and my brother. It seemed like we would ride forever. Sometimes we raced to keep up with each other. Sometimes we’d challenge ourselves by biking over a bridge. My favorite thing was to bike to the canal, then walk down closer to the water. … Continue reading
