10 Best Fitness Choices for 2006

It’s the time of year for making those top ten lists and as I wind up my workweek and look forward to this weekend, I thought what a better way to summarize the year and the work we’ve done here at Families.com and get in a little fun at the same time. Towards that effort, I have thought about some of the fitness choices we’ve discussed here in the Fitness Blog and I’ve thought about the New Year’s Resolutions we are all considering for next year and those that we planned for this year.

In that light, here are my choices for the best fitness choices for 2006:

  • Banning Soda in our Schools – This is a very progressive effort by the soda companies and the Department of Education as they limit soda sales to elementary and middle schools
  • McDonald’s Gets Fit – McDonald’s has made many strides in the area of nutrition and fitness in the last year from their proposals to fitness activities, to their giving away of fitness DVDs to their continued expansion of healthier menu choices including apple slices in lieu of French fries in Happy Meals and plenty of salads for the adults
  • Stroller Moms – this is a growing movement and trend and I’ve seen it expand over the last year as local malls and more feature activity classes for moms with their kids in their strollers – giving them social connections and fitness options that weren’t there before
  • Curves for Women – This woman focused fitness club with its circuit of equipment and more continues their rapid fire expansion across the United States and more and more women are getting into their own Curves
  • Don’t Worry, Get Healthy – The benefits of regular exercise are being touted everywhere from your bank statement to your health insurance benefits and more – businesses are getting in on the act and encouraging their employees to get fitter by requiring exercise breaks, putting in fitness gyms and getting them corporate memberships to fitness clubs
  • Whole Foods, Healthier Foods – From Splenda to flavored waters, there are a multitude of options available for people looking for fitness options that are both flavorful and interesting
  • iTrainers, iPods, iFitness – Don’t have time to hit the gym or can’t afford a personal trainer in your personal regimen? Not a problem anymore you can download a multitude of personal training regimens right to your iPod, your MP3 player or your computer – this gives you more flexibility than you’ve ever known before
  • Dance, Dance Revolution – This dance craze and game has been sweeping the country showing up in arcade games and home systems everywhere – kids love it, teens love it and adults love it – what better way to get fit than to get moving and dancing
  • Yoga, Pilates & Tai Chi – Once considered a niche market for the fitness industry, it’s grown and expanded across the country where you can find classes at most major fitness clubs and other venues including malls, private Yoga studios, dance studios, gymnastics schools and more
  • Home Fitness Equipment – The area of home fitness equipment has been constantly growing and developing – creating units that take up a smaller footprint in your home, while providing you with all the equipment you might find in a fitness club – prices are dropping to – making them more affordable to the general consumer

This is has been a great year for the world of Fitness and for those of me here at the Fitness blog. It’s been a real pleasure delving into all of this with you. I look forward to seeing what 2007 brings as we get revved up for our new year!
