23andMe has been doing a series of short, online, courses for genealogists. Each had something to do with genetics. Those who watch the videos, and take the quiz at the end, have the chance to win a $25.00 Amazon Gift Card. This is their third, and final “Back-to-School” quiz.
23andMe is a company that makes a home DNA test kit. You provide a sample of your saliva, and that sample gets analyzed. Genealogists can use this tool to learn more about what their genetics say about their health risks and also to find out more about their heritage. You might connect with a relative that you had never heard of before thanks to what 23andMe has discovered.
They have been doing a short series of “Back-To-School” courses for genealogists. The first one was called “Human Prehistory 101”, and it covered information about our earliest human ancestors.
The second course was called “Genetics 101”. It covered information about DNA. The course also described how genetic traits are passed down from one generation in a family to another.
The final course in the “Back-to-School” series has been revealed. This one is about Sex Chromosomes. Genealogists who have taken the previous two courses (or who remember this subject from their biology classes at school) know that we each have 23 pairs of chromosomes. The final course focuses on the 23rd pair, which determines whether a person is male or female.
This course includes two videos. The first one is called “Genetics 101 Part 3: Where Do Genes Come From”. It is a little over four minutes long. The second video is called “Genetics 101 Part 5: Why No Why?” This one is very short. It is just over a minute in length.
Remember back when you were in school, and the teacher decided to show a movie? Often there would be a “pop” quiz to take when the movie ended. The purpose of the quiz was to let the teacher know which students were paying attention and which ones were sleeping.
