Evidence of the Holy Spirit

The other day at our church ladies’ breakfast, one of the women had a locket around her neck. ‘Does it open? And does it have a photograph inside?’ I asked. She admitted it didn’t. I have a large silver locket my mother bought for me many years ago. Inside it for years were two photos of Mick and me when we were both about eighteen and ‘going steady.’ Then one day I decided the engraved silver was tarnished and needed a clean, so I left the locket closed, got the silver cleaner out and cleaned the outside. I never thought … Continue reading

A Work in Progress

Have you ever watched an artist at work? Sometimes it’s hard to see how it can ever become a work of art. To begin with it often looks a mess. For example, what did Michelangelo see in a block of marble that made him create the statue of David? As a writer, I never talk about or show anyone my work in progress. No-one ever hears anything about it, till it has got to the stage of being past first full draft and well into the revisions. Then, and only then, I might let other writers read it in a … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 5:1-6

Nephi and his brothers have just obtained the brass plates and are on their way back to the encampment of their father, accompanied by Zoram, the servant of Laban. 1. And it came to pass that after we had come down into the wilderness unto our father, behold, he was filled with joy, and also my mother, Sariah, was exceedingly glad, for she truly had mourned because of us. 2. For she had supposed that we had perished in the wilderness; and she also had complained against my father, telling him that he was a visionary man, man; saying: Behold … Continue reading

Are You A Real Believer?

What is a real believer to you? Is it someone who believes that Jesus the messiah has indeed come? Is it someone who believes that God can answer prayers and perform miracles in people’s lives? James 2:19, “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!” Even Satan knows that Jesus is Lord. Why else would the name of Jesus Christ, our loving God, be used in cursing so much? There is power in Jesus. Satan hates this fact and has worked to remove the mention of Jesus in our society except while promoting … Continue reading

The Functions and Attributes of the Holy Spirit

What are the functions and attributes of the Holy Spirit? The day a person receives Christ, I believe the Holy Spirit of God takes up permanent residency in that person. A Christian’s relationship with the Holy Spirit is too often ignored or under-emphasized. Here are a few functions of the Holy Spirit which are laid out for us in Scripture. 1. The Holy Spirit convicts of sin (John 16:8-9). In the unsaved, He convicts of sin to bring them to salvation. In the saved, He convicts of sin to keep them clean and show them how to live for Jesus. … Continue reading

Faith is…

What does faith mean to you? I’ve defined faith as being able to put my trust in God believing He knows better than me. The Bible defines faith for us: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1) By faith we know there is wind, not because we see the wind, but we see, feel or hear the effects from it. I believe it’s the same with God; we don’t see Him in a physical sense, but we do see His creation and the impact of His goodness. “For since the … Continue reading

Believing in What We Can Not See

I don’t believe it’s our job to convince people of the existence of God. Let’s face it, if people take a look around themselves and still can’t see the divinity of creation, how are we, by just our words, going to be able to convince someone differently? Psalm 19:1-2, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech and night unto night reveals knowledge.” Romans 1:18-20, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may … Continue reading

Finances and Giving

Admittedly, I am not the best person to be giving advice about giving and finances; so I’m not going there. There does seem to be a supernatural impact in giving though whether by our time or with money. I remember years ago when my husband and I were starting out. We were poor. We prided ourselves in not getting over our heads into debt, but did find ourselves charging our rent a couple times to make due. He was working 40 hours a week and I about 30. We were just beginning to understand what leaning on God for our … Continue reading

What Satan Wants You to Believe: Part 1

The Following is part 1 of a two part series on the lies of Satan and how he would have us believe: Deny that Jesus is who the Bible claims Him to be. Jesus is the Son of God; God manifested in the flesh (see 1 Timothy 3:16). In believing Jesus is not who He claims in the Bible to be, it would make a liar out of Him; it would make the Bible not truth, and our faith in vain. Deny the Power of God still moves today. By not believing that God can guide us, comfort us, heal … Continue reading

The Prayer of Jabez: Bless me!

“Oh, that You would bless me indeed,…” You can hear almost hear the cry of Jabez’ heart to God, “bless me indeed.” As Bruce Wilkinson shares in his book The Prayer of Jabez, some might view this prayer as a bit selfish. But God wants us to come to Him. Just as our children know they can come to us for their needs to be met, it’s okay to ask our heavenly Father for our needs to be met as well. How would you love to have your children seek you for your wisdom, relationship and desire for what is … Continue reading
