Healthy Websites for Kids: BAM.gov

Confession time: I watch a lot of cartoons. I do! And lately, I’ve caught a series of commercials on Cartoon Network that led me to a new healthy website I want to share. The commercials feature a big, kinda scary-looking guy talking about disease prevention — like sneezing into your sleeve or a tissue, washing your hands, and other tips. The commercials then suggest viewers find more health tips at BAM.gov. So I went to take a look! The first thing I noticed? No scary bald guy. I kinda miss him, actually! The images on the site are bright and … Continue reading

Natural Allergy Relief

I’m falling apart. That’s the only way I can word it. If I could go back to the perfect age, I’d choose 35. I still felt very healthy, energetic, and knew enough to know better but not enough to worry myself to death. Flash forward into this soon-to-be 45 year old body and mind. The passing years are racking up and taking their toll. No, it’s not all bad. I’m more successful, happier, and more in love than at any other time in my life. I have the energy to exercise nearly every day, which I didn’t have the gumption … Continue reading

Swine Flu and Fear

I’m writing this on day three of a fever, so I apologize if it isn’t as coherent as I’d like. I’m sick. It started off feeling like my usual sinus troubles, so I treated it in the usual way: irrigating my sinuses with salt water. This plan has worked in the past, fending off several sinus infections before they got to the point where I’d need a doctor or antibiotics. But while the sinus problem cleared up, the feeling of not-good stuck around. My head was still pounding. Two days ago, the headache was joined by an all-over body ache … Continue reading

Weight Loss: How Important Are The Numbers To You?

Going back about 20 years ago I read somewhere that your ideal body weight was measured as starting at 5 feet and 100 pounds for woman. As each inch was added, it was calculated as an additional 5 pounds. For example, a woman that was 5 feet 2 inches tall should weigh 110 pounds and a woman that was 5 feet 5 inches should weigh 125 pounds. This way of measuring did not take in consideration the frame of the body. I followed this rule of thumb and I looked almost skeletal, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was thin and … Continue reading

Working It Off!

Everyone knows just how important exercising is not only for dieters, but for everyone. Exercising has great health benefits in your quest for weight loss or just to stay healthy and in shape. If you are like me you prefer exercising outdoors. Whether it is walking, biking, jogging or what have you, there is just something invigorating about doing your exercise outside in the wide-open space and fresh air. In some parts of the world this is not always possible due to inclement weather. Where I am right now it is 10 degrees and snowing so going outside is not … Continue reading

Flax Seed Oil for Carpal Tunnel

Aimee Amodio has written some fabulous blogs about carpal tunnel here on Familes.com. I include her links at the bottom of this article. I would like to share with you my own experiences with this condition and the ways I have found to control it in my life. However, you need to do what feels best to you in your circumstances; if you feel you need to be treated with more intervention, you follow that feeling. The summer I was seventeen, I did a lot of crochet, cross-stitch, and typing. As the season progressed, I noticed that my forearms were … Continue reading
