Parents and the Academy Awards

You know you are a parent when… you haven’t seen a single one of the movies nominated for an Academy Award. And I am not just referring to the Best Picture nominees; I’m talking about any movie in any category. You, you, you, and me. Can you imagine taking a young child to see the mostly silent, black-and-white best flick nominee, “The Artist”? My kid would have gotten us thrown out of the theater within the first four minutes, or after the first 50 times of her asking: “Mommy, why does this movie have no sound?”–whichever came first. Last year, … Continue reading

The 2010 Academy Awards

I look forward to the award season all year, with the cherry on the top being the Academy Awards. However, this year’s ceremony left me feeling like “Eh.” The hosts were James Franco and Anne Hathaway. I have read that these two were chosen to bring in a younger demographic. While they are young stars and very good actors and beautiful, they aren’t the greatest Oscar hosts and I am being nice with that statement. I think James Franco, who is adorable, was literally phoning in his hosting because he had his phone in his hand a couple of times. … Continue reading

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards’ Weirdest Moment

If you watched the 82nd Annual Academy Awards last night, you saw there weren’t many surprises. Hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were charming and humorous, but there were no really scandalous or risky jokes. Jeff Bridges locked up Best Actor and Sandra Bullock pulled off her expected Best Actress win. But, there was one surreal moment. It was in the middle of the ceremony when Best Documentary Short was announced. I know what you are thinking “Best Documentary Short?” It is usually during times like this when people go to the kitchen to get a snack. Last night, Music … Continue reading

Who Won’t Be Eating Turkey Today

I am not a huge fan of turkey, but Thanksgiving just doesn’t seem like Thanksgiving without one, at least to me. But, there are plenty of celebrities that won’t be eating turkey this year because they are vegetarian or vegan. PETA named funny man Russell Brand one of its Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2011, so needless to say he won’t be gnawing on a turkey leg tomorrow. The female Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2011 was Kristen Wiig of “Saturday Night Live” and Bridemaids fame, so no turkey for her either. There are several Academy Award winners and nominees who will … Continue reading

Hollywood Couples Update

As usual, there are always couple updates in Hollywood. First up, the not-so-good. He said/she said still seems to be going on between divorcing couple Seal and Heidi Klum. In fact, Seal often seems to be at war with what he himself says. At the first of this month, Seal told a TMZ reporter that “I would have thought that Heidi would have shown a little more class and at least waited until we separated first before deciding to fornicate with the help, as it were.” The “help” he’s referring to is the couple’s bodyguard, Martin Kristen, who has been … Continue reading

Celebrity Swag Weekend

If things were correct in this world, the people that can’t afford a lot would be the ones getting award show swag. After all, can’t most celebrities afford all this stuff anyhow? But, as it turns out on this Academy Awards weekend, the celebrities are making out like bandits. I guess it is only far because only a select few will take Oscar home this weekend. All the others get to take home the swag. What’s up for grabs this year? For the stars that stay at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, quite a few goodies. Lisa Gal … Continue reading

Christian Bale Roughed Up in China

Actor Christian Bale was in Beijing, China this week to promote his latest film, “The Flowers of War.” The film, by Director Zhang Yimou, is about an American priest that sheltered prostitutes and female students during a 1937 Japanese invasion. While there, Bale decided to go see Chen Guangcheng, an attorney and proponent of human rights. The forty-year-old Chen, who is blind, was under house arrest for six months in 2005-2006 after talking to Time magazine about forced abortions performed in the Shandong Province of China. In 2006, he was arrested for destruction of property and disrupting traffic by assembling … Continue reading

Parents and Oscar Night

You know you are a parent when you’ve only seen one of the Academy Awards’ 10 best-picture nominees… Let’s hear it for Toy Story 3! What does it say about me that I’ve seen Toy Story 3 four times in the movie theater and about 1000 times at home after my 6-year-old was gifted with the DVD version at Christmas? There was a time when I would plan my entire day around the Oscars. I’d clear my calendar, invite friends over, order in pizza or Chinese, and then refuse to answer the phone while I drooled over my favorite Hollywood … Continue reading

Sandra Bullock’s Adoption Finalized

I love Sandra Bullock as an actress. Her movies are outstanding and she finally achieved well-deserved recognition with an Academy Award for The Blind Side. The first movie where she caught my attention was Demolition Man. That is an awful movie. Her career obviously survived. My very favorite Sandra Bullock movies are Miss Congeniality and Two Weeks’ Notice. Practical Magic has just recently become a must-see Sandra Bullock movie. I finally saw Hope Floats and While You Were Sleeping too. I have yet to watch the award-winning The Blind Side. Like many people who tend to follow celebrities through movies, … Continue reading

Danny Glover Among Sodexo Protesters Arrested

Actor Danny Glover and 11 other people were arrested Friday when protesting Sodexo, a French based food service company with U.S. headquarters in Maryland. The protesters, which included both Americans and French workers, were there because they feel that the company has been treating their workers unfairly. Glover and the others were arrested when they stepped past the yellow police tape. Montgomery Country police spokesman Capt. Paul Starks said that the protesters were asked three times to step back from the company headquarters, but were arrested after refusing. The twelve protesters were issued trespassing citations and released from custody. However, … Continue reading
