Debt and Marriage: How It is Tough to Love When You Owe

Many couples enter into a marriage with debt already in hand. Others accumulate debt together. Either way, nurturing a loving relationship can be hard when debt is hanging over your head. In fact, according to a study by Jeffrey Dew at Utah State University, couples who reported disagreeing about finance once a week were over 30 percent more likely to get divorced than couples who reported disagreeing about finances only a few times a month. Another inference can be made from this study: there is a whole lot of disagreement about money out there. Debt is a source of contention. … Continue reading

Aniston Gets Engaged and Pitt Gets Married?

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston divorced nearly seven years ago and yet their names are still often tied together in the tabloids. This seems especially true lately. If you believe what you read, Brad and fiancée Angelina Jolie are always trying to rain on Aniston’s parade as far as the headlines go. Pitt and Jolie announced their engagement in April after seven years and six children together. When Marriage Is Built Upon Manipulation

Have you ever tried to manipulate circumstances in your marriage, just to get your way? While it might provide temporary pleasure, the long-term consequences of this can be devastating to a marriage. The degree to which it was used and the outcome might vary, but for the most part these are the rare occurrences in a marriage. However, some marriages can end up being built on manipulation. If you do this, I will do that. If you give me such and such, I will … Continue reading

Less People Are Getting Married

Have you heard that marriage is on the decline? Not in the sense that they are ending in divorce (although, that is obviously still an issue) but that less people in America are embracing holy matrimony? Back in 1960, the percentage of adults married was at 72%. Currently it’s at 51% and according to new research, with the trend continuing this way, in just a few years it will fall below 50%. While marriage is declining, single person/parent homes and living together is increasing. We all have our own thoughts and opinions on this. My personal view is that marriage … Continue reading

Fewer People are Getting Married

One of the most important documents that genealogists search for are marriage records. Locating that kind of record is a good way to confirm some of your research. Future genealogists may have problems with this, though, because it seems that fewer people are getting married. Now you have additional relationships to work through. Then there … Continue reading

Getting Away With Your Spouse

It has been a very long time since my husband and I have gotten away together…without kids. So a few months ago we began planning for our upcoming 20th wedding anniversary. Our destination was Maine. We looked at cottages to stay in, entertainment (such as whale watching) and thought about eating our favorite food, seafood (only much fresher). We dreamed about stepping into the ocean. It was going to be a very romantic getaway. We even planned the dates we would go and my husband began looking at airfare. But then as the months began to pass by, medical bills … Continue reading

Are You Selfish or Selfless in Your Marriage?

Let’s face it…it’s in our nature to be selfish. And our society sure knows how to fuel that. We expect instant results, instant gratification and instant service. Just about anything we want is at our disposal. So we have to be careful that we don’t take that into our marriages. One important component to a happy, successful marriage is selflessness. But I’m afraid that it’s not something we see demonstrated very often, so we may be unsure what that exactly looks like. To be selfless is to be the opposite of selfish. So it might include giving in on some … Continue reading
