A Tribute To My Best Friends

I didn’t realize today was Best Friends Day until I read Courtney’s blog — thanks, Court! What a great holiday. I’ll be calling my two-legged best friends later today, but for right now, I want to focus on my four-legged best friends.

As I write this, I have a dog on either side of me. Moose is smashed up against my side and looking up hopefully for a belly rub. Lally isn’t in physical contact, but every so often she lifts her head to check on me. When I’m in the office, she crams herself into the space between my desk and the wall to stay close to me.

Even on my worst days — when I’m tired or sick or sad — my two best friends are here to make sure I get up and keep going. They make sure I get out of the house for walks and sunshine and fresh air. They make me laugh with their wacky antics, whether it’s Moose rolling in the grass to scratch his back or Lally dumping iced tea on my head.

My two best friends protect me from dangers like the landscaping guys and their lawn mowers, motorcycles on the street, the vacuum cleaner, and strange dogs walking by. They’re always willing to help me finish my dinner if I’m too full — especially if I’m having chicken. They keep me warm at night and encourage me to nap during the day. There’s nothing like a warm dog at my side to make me sleepy!

Moose and Lally always forgive me for leaving, regardless of how long I’m gone. They like my cooking, and love the treats I hand out. The littlest word or touch from me makes them so happy. And my reward? A wag or a kiss or a cuddle. I think I’m getting the better part of the deal.

I love my best friends. We’ve only been together for a few years, but it’s hard to remember what life was like without them.
