Ailing Crooners

Singer Robert Goulet, 73, is heavily sedated and breathing through a respirator as he awaits a lung transplant. The doctors have told Goulet’s wife, Vera, that a lung transplant has the highest success rate (88 percent) of all transplants. However, a suitable donor for Goulet has not been found yet. The National Lung Association stated that in 2005, only 25% of the 3,500 people on the waiting list actually received a lung transplant.

Goulet performed on September 20th in Syracuse, NY, but fell ill shortly after the concert when he was on his way home to Las Vegas. At first, doctors thought it was just a bug until he got weaker and weaker and had to be hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Canter in Los Angeles ten days later. His official web site says Goulet was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, which can progress very rapidly and is fatal.

Goulet performed on Broadway as Lancelot in Camelot and was last seen on Broadway in 2005’s La Cage aux Folles. He also won the 1962 Grammy for Best New Artist. He has appeared in dozens of television shows and movies as well including Beetlejuice and The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear.

Also ailing is singer Russell Watson. The 40-year-old tenor had a brain tumor removed last year, but had emergency surgery today to remove another tumor just found on an MRI scan Wednesday. The new tumor is said to be more aggressive than the last, prompting the swift surgery.

His official web site states that his is in critical condition, but says, “All our hopes, prayers, and wishes are with him.” Watson’s debut album “The Voice” held the number one position on the classical charts for over a year. For that album, he won two Classical Brit awards. He has performed for Pope John Paul, President George Bush, and Queen Elizabeth.

About Libby Pelham

I have always loved to write and Families.com gives me the opportunity to share my passion for writing with others. I work full-time as a web developer at UTHSC and most of my other time is spent with my son (born 2004). I love everything pop culture, but also enjoy writing about green living (it has opened my eyes to many things!) and health (got to worry about that as you get older!).
