All About House Numbers

house number Choosing and installing new house numbers can be a great idea for your home. New house numbers can really add to your home’s curb appeal. They may even make it a safer home, too. How? Well let’s say you needed emergency services; hopefully you never will. But if you do, easy to read house numbers will make it easier to find you.

Here is what you should know about house numbers.

Obviously, you want to choose a number that can be seen from the street. At the same time, you don’t want to overwhelm you house or your neighbors by screaming the address with an overly large set of house numbers. A good guideline is to have house numbers that are at least three inches high. You want the color to contrast with your house colors. It is also a good idea to check with your local town or city counsel in case there are any regulations that apply.

Mount your house numbers at eye level, about five feet from the base of your front door.

When you install your house numbers, be sure to use a level to make sure that they are straight. They may look straight to you, but if they aren’t exactly level, something will seem off to anyone who looks at them, especially from afar.

You can sometimes refurbish your house numbers instead of replacing them. If your numbers are made of metal, remove them and then try using a hand held dremel tool with a brush attachment to shine them up. I recommend removing the numbers before you attempt to do this, since one slip can damage your exterior paint. And, it will be easier to get into the corners and crevices of the house numbers.

Many house numbers on the market today are made with weather-resistant materials. Don’t forget to use corrosion-resistant screws when you attach these numbers, if you want to get the full benefit of this feature.
