Altered Christmas Paint Cans

This is a project I recently completed to wrap a few of our Christmas gifts. It worked perfectly for gift cards and jewelry.

Empty Paint Can (purchased at a home improvement store)
Making Memories Patterned Paper from Watercolor Collection
White Organza Ribbon
Making Memories Christmas Foam Stamps and Paint

Xyron Machine
Fiskars Circle Cutter
Paper Trimmer
American Crafts Slick Writer Marker

1. I measured the height of the paint can (4 1/2 inches) and cut strips of paper from the 12 X 12 sheets of the patterned paper. The paper was not long enough to wrap all the way around the can, so I cut a shorter piece of paper (2 inches by 4 1/2 inches) to fill in the gap.

2. Next I measured the space on the lid (3 inch circle) and used my circle cutter to create a perfectly sized circle from the patterned paper.

3. Once the paper was cut, I put it through the Xyron machine and used permanent adhesive.

4. Then I peeled the paper from the Xyron backing and carefully rolled it onto the can. The adhesive is very sticky and once the paper touches the can it cannot be moved. It was very important to make sure that it was placed straight when the paper first touched the can. The short piece can be placed onto the can first, and then roll the long piece around the can and overlap with the short piece of paper.

5. Now that the paper was attached, it was time to stamp! I placed some paint in a paint tray. Then used a foam brush to paint onto the stamp. It is important to only apply a thin layer of paint so that the image is crisp. I stamped the images around the perimeter of the can and also placed one stamp on the lid. Allow the paint to dry.

6. For a finishing touch I tied ribbon around the can. On some of the cans I also tied an ornament charm or gift tag to the ribbon.

7. On the ornament charms I wrote the name of the recipient with the Slick Writer Marker. A Sharpie would also work well.

This was a fun project to create and I also enjoyed filling each can with gifts for family and friends. I am ready for some gift giving!
