American Express is conducting a Spring Fling promotion. When you buy two American Express gift cards, they will send you a $25 Spring Fling gift card in the mail. When I first heard of this promotion, I wasn’t very impressed. It’s a great promotion, but I don’t need any gift cards right now. Then I started thinking about it. These Amex gift cards work anywhere an American Express credit card is accepted. I pay for gas and groceries with my debit card. Why couldn’t I use the gift cards instead? I would get use out of the Amex cards and get a $25 card to have fun with. This promotion is starting to sound better.
This week, CVS is making this deal even sweeter. When you purchase two $50 Amex gift cards, CVS will give you $5 in Extra Care Bucks back. This offer is only good once per CVS card and it expires June 7, 2008.
Here are the important details. Each household is allowed two offers. You have to purchase the cards between May 1, 2008 and June 30, 2008. The $25 Spring Fling gift card can be used at Best Buy, Borders, Spafinder, or Fandango. Yes, that means more free movies. The Spring Fling card will expire in 90 days. So if you want to use it for Christmas shopping, you need to shop early. There is a $3.95 activation fee for $25 cards and $5.95 activation fee for $50 cards. If you choose the teen or occasion cards, they are $1 more to activate. If you bank with a credit union, check with them. They might rebate the activation fees if you purchase the cards with the CU debit card.
In order to receive the Spring Fling gift card, you must fill out a rebate form and send it in with the original receipt. These rebate forms should be available at any store that is participating in the promotion. Check out the web site for the long list of stores. I did not have any luck finding the rebates at CVS. If you are having trouble finding them, you can call customer service and they will email you a PDF file of the form.
After the activation fees and the CVS bonus, shoppers will come out $18.10 ahead, per deal. If your credit union refunds the activation fees, shoppers will be $30 ahead.
