Analysis VS. Action

The process of analyzing does not always have to be the opposite of “action.” In fact, in many cases, analysis is the process we perform as we figure out what to do and decide how we are going to act. Sometimes, we even find ourselves doing the analyzing AFTER we’ve jumped into action. Regardless, in a home business, both the ability to make the most of analysis and to take action when the need arises is important skills to cultivate and develop.

The process of analysis involves not only taking in all of the information about the problem or situation at hand, but also gathering additional resources and information and evaluating that information. For example, if there is an issue with one of your suppliers and you are often receiving late or damaged product—you will want to research how the product is being shipped from the supplier to try to identify where the problem might be occurring. Is it happening because of disorganization prior to shipment, or during the shipping process? It might actually be a problem with the delivery company or local delivery processing. Prior to taking action, you’ll want to investigate and analyze the information you are able to gather in order to make an educated decision.

The more informed you are, and the more carefully you’ve worked through the analysis process, the better prepared you will be to make a sound decision. Of course, sometimes it is important to act quickly. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you should skip the analysis process; you just might need to take a “snap shot” of the situation in order to decide the best action. Consider what happens when you see your child run out into the street—you don’t really have to stop and weigh all the possibilities in order to make a sound decision and take appropriate action. You are able to take a quick snapshot of the dangerous situation and take action immediately. This can happen in your business operations too. The important thing is to learn how to NOT panic, and take the time that is necessary to analyze a situation prior to choosing the appropriate action. This way you’ll make informed decisions and learn when to analyze and when to act.
