Appreciate Working from Home

Last week I was reminded of one of the great benefits to working from home. I live in Wisconsin and we got hit with a wallop of a blizzard that went from Tuesday evening until Wednesday. I couldn’t believe what I woke up to Wednesday morning. My van was completely buried, our alley had four feet high snow drifts and the side door to our house was unreachable because it was snowed in.

It didn’t take long for my husband to discover he wasn’t going anywhere. He tried to leave for work but our alley prevented him from even getting out of the garage. We and a dozen other neighbors spent the next few hours digging out. By the next day my back was absolutely killing me.

My children ended up staying home as schools were closed for a couple of days. It was nice to be able to stay inside and keep warm. I was also able to sleep in a little later those two days.

But I was really appreciating the fact that despite the weather outside being frightful, I was able to still work. In fact one of those days I spent in my pajamas, something I don’t typically do but it did feel nice.

I didn’t lose any productivity or money. I was able to still do what I love. I made a joke in my Facebook status that I was jealous because I didn’t get a snow day since I work from home. A friend commented and said, “Yeah, but we’re jealous of you all the rest of the days of the year.”

Sometimes I can forget the wonderful benefits to working from home. Isn’t it always the case that we think the grass is greener on the other side? We can find things to complain about, no matter how good it is.

So if you work from home, take some time to really think about the benefits you have. Stop complaining about the insignificant stuff or what you feel you are lacking. Appreciate that you can use your talents and skills right in the comfort of your own home.
