Enjoying the Holidays One At a Time

I was shopping three weeks ago at a popular store and was a little surprised. Now maybe it happened last year, but I don’t think so or it would not have struck me so hard. Mind you, it was around the second week in October that this occurred. While I was making my way around the store shopping for various items for my household I maneuvered my cart around the corner to proceed to the next aisle. As I carefully wheeled my cart around the corner there it was, a Christmas tree. Really, mass merchant chain store? This year you … Continue reading

Top Ten Halloween Costumes

Goblins and ghouls will be on the prowl in your neighborhood very soon. In a few days, the neighborhood kids will be traveling from door to door looking for candy. We are going to see some different styles of costumes this year. Be prepared. Here is a list of the top ten costumes for this year: *Twister Girl Costume: This costume looks as if they took the Twister game pad, wrapped it around the girl and put a belt on it. It’s really kind of cute, in a goofy way. The spinner hat looks like a miniature version of the … Continue reading

What’s Inside the Bag?

Every year your child goes trick or treating the first thing that every parent says when they get home is, “Don’t eat the candy until I check it.”. The parent then goes through the ritual of emptying the entire contents of their child’s plastic pumpkin or Halloween bag on the floor or on the table. To be checked thoroughly you must inspect each and every candy for holes, tears or open ends. This is a job for the parent’s, as they know what demented human beings are capable of doing. In the process though of checking their children’s candy they … Continue reading

Making Time for the Elderly

While visiting a home for the elderly recently I noticed that many of them were staring out the window, lost in their own thoughts. I wondered what they were thinking. Were they thinking of what they were going to have to eat that evening at supper? Were they thinking of a happier time in their younger years? Perhaps they were trying to remember what a hug felt like or the touch of a baby’s skin. Many elderly people are lonely, as their loved ones have passed on and they are now all alone. They are the last survivors in their … Continue reading

To the Pumpkin Patch We Go!

One of my fondest memories as a child was going to the pumpkin patch, much to my parent’s surprise. Here they had spent multiple dollars on tickets for the circus and other entertaining shows that catered to children when what really made me happy was the pumpkin patch. The pumpkin patch has fall written all over it. The cool, crisp smell of the leaves, the steaming cups of hot chocolate, the sweet cider and donuts. These were just some of the things going on at the pumpkin patch that I was taken to as a child. I didn’t care for … Continue reading

Preparing for Life’s End

As I grow older I realize that I am not invincible, like I was thought I was. I am realizing that I cannot do the things that I used to do and it scares me. It is not that I am afraid to leave this world, I am afraid for those that I leave behind. Just the other day I was talking to someone. He said that he was driving along the road and realized that he used to think of future plans and things that he would like to do in life. Now he finds himself preparing for the … Continue reading

Fall is My Favorite Season: Part Three

Although Fall is my favorite season, picking up leaves had become an even bigger chore for me. It is too expensive to have it done professionally so I do it myself still. How do it do it now? I do it with a vengeance. I do it with fierceness. I find that I am almost angry when I do it. I just want to get it done. I get right in there whenever I see a pile of leaves and dump them in my dumpster. I do a couple of bags when I get home from work. I do a … Continue reading

Fall is My Favorite Season: Part Two

I decided to have some trees cut that were too close to the house and very old. I knew that I would miss the trees, but I was worried about our safety. After they were cut down I really missed them, as I knew that I would. However, the leaves the following year went from 120 bags to 40 bags. That was pretty nice. Although the leaves in my yard decreased 40 bags was still an overwhelming amount of leaves to pick up. I did have some help throughout the years, but as the years passed my family had things … Continue reading

Fall is My Favorite Season: Part One

It is almost that time of year again. This year Fall officially begins on September 23rd. It is my favorite season. I love the colors of the leaves in orange, brown, green, gold and red. I love the clothes of the season also. Warm cuddly sweaters, blazes, skirts, boots and the rich colors that they come in. I love almost everything about it, except picking up the leaves. It is not that I even mind picking up the leaves. There are just so many of them that it is exhausting. The first year that I did them as a single … Continue reading

August 31st Is National Trail Mix Day

Since today is National Trail Mix Day I thought that it would be a good idea to give a quick and easy recipe for trail mix, in its honor. Trail mix is often taken on the road to increase your stamina and your energy levels. It is just the right type of snack to bring along with you because it is packed with vitamins. How to Make Trail Mix: Gather up all of the ingredients that you will need, such as sealable baggies, a non-sugary cereal, raisins, dried apricots, dried peaches, chocolate hard shelled candies (such as M&Ms, pretzels and … Continue reading
