Who Will Be At Home With You and Your New Baby?

One thing that you may be thinking about now that you are pregnant is who will be at home with you and for how long during those first few weeks after your baby is born. For many people, a spouse or partner will be able to be at home for a week or two, or even longer. That is a good thing, because it not only gives them time to get acquainted with the baby, it gives you a set of helping hands as you learn how to balance baby care, self care, and other things like cooking and cleaning. … Continue reading

Family History – it’s not All About the Research

The holidays are a time when you may be able to see relatives whom you do not get to see frequently. Of course, that is a wonderful thing. As a genealogist, you may be tempted to try to get as much information as you can during the visits. You might even make an action plan of what you want to discuss and with whom. I have discovered that unless there is some pressing research that you absolutely must do, those research questions and plans can be saved for email or telephone exchanges, or even writing letters. Holiday visits are a … Continue reading

Baby’s First Plane Trip

So in just 3 weeks, I am headed on my first airplane adventure with my little guy. We are flying to Texas to spend some quality time with my extended family. Not only am I taking my baby, but I’m taking my older two kids also. And, no husband. Yikes! I have realized in preparing for this trip that a lot of preparation is necessary. It is kind of stressing me out a little bit, quite frankly. Just the gear needed to travel with three kids is daunting. But, the one that comes with the most necessities is the baby! … Continue reading

Still A Part Of The Family

Recently I was reminded of what co parenting looks like when the entire extended family makes it work. Being a single mom I usually only look at things from my point of view but this weekend I got the chance to look at this as a relative instead of the single parent. My best friend’s son and his wife are divorced, their son is three. I think that Sarah and Tyler have done a wonderful job of co parenting their son. This little boy seems happy, well adjusted and well loved. When he is with us he is the apple … Continue reading

Do Holidays Always Include Extended Family?

My husband and I chose to spend Mother’s Day with his parents this year. They were willing to come to our house, which worked great for me, because our baby is always happier in the comfort of our home. While my daughter napped, my mother-in-law and I relaxed in front of the TV (finally, I was able to watch TLC instead of ESPN). Our husbands slaved away in the kitchen, working to prepare a delicious Mother’s Day meal. We admired the flowers we’d been given and enjoyed the feeling of putting our feet up. After lunch, the whole gang headed … Continue reading

Does Your Baby Give Gifts On Holidays?

Since my daughter was born, I’ve had the joy of experiencing a number of holidays for the first time as a mother. There’s something about sharing big days with a child that make it so much more meaningful and exciting. Holidays we’ve shared so far include Halloween, where we laughed at how cute our baby looked in her costume; Christmas, where we bought our honey a myriad of presents, even though she wasn’t old enough to open them; and Easter, where we all cheered when we got a picture of our daughter smiling with her Easter basket. For those holidays, … Continue reading

Family Reunion Planning: Types and Themes

I may have gotten ahead of myself in this family reunion planning series, since technically this post should have come before my post about budget, venue, and food. Considering the type of reunion you will have, and any theme you may want, will help tremendously when determining your reunion budget. TYPES Small, intimate gatherings are probably the easiest and most inexpensive family reunions to plan. These often include just a few of your closest family members, and may be held in celebration of a special event, such as an anniversary, birthday, graduation, baby shower, etc. Medium-sized family reunions can also … Continue reading

Ways to Survive a Car Trip With a Baby

We have lovely friends who live at least an hour’s drive away from us by car. Our extended family is also a short trek away – close enough to make the journey seem feasible, but far enough away to make it seem impossible when you have a child who can’t stand the car seat. I vividly remember the first time we tried to head out to a pre-Christmas dinner with family. Our daughter was about 3 months old, ands she screamed for a good 20 minutes along the way. She screamed so violently that I debated turning the car around, … Continue reading

Hollywood Stars Adding to the Family

She’s used to getting paid to make people laugh, but now the joke’s on her. Wanda Sykes says her new twins are getting the last laugh now that they are home and turning her life upside down. Sykes and her wife, Alex, welcomed twins on April 27th, according to PEOPLE magazine. Daughter Olivia Lou weighed in at 6 lbs., 7 oz., and was 19-inches long, while son Lucas Claude debuted at 7 lbs., 9 oz., and was 20-inches long. The comedian’s wife gave birth to the babies, and is reportedly recuperating “very nicely” following the extended labor and delivery. Sykes, … Continue reading
