The other day we were out shopping in Lancaster county, at a little gem of a store. We were looking for something very specific for our home, a set of three candles that we loved but had decided to wait on purchasing until we were sure we really wanted them. On the way through the store, I stopped to admire some fall decorations and picked out a lovely little pumpkin with some hand carving in it. Unfortunately, the price wasn’t too lovely, especially for my husband, but it did inspire me to look beyond cost to find some more frugal ways of decorating.
Go outside and gather some materials, whatever looks interesting to you. Maybe you can finds some colorful leaves, seed pods, pine cones or fall grasses or even some interesting branches. Try to look at them in a new light and get inspired to use them in decorating.
Family Circle has this cute idea for using nuts. If you don’t have any in your own backyard (we have a black walnut tree that is currently throwing down nuts to anyone who dares walk by it in the driveway), you can purchase some inexpensive nuts at the grocery store. Make sure to select ribbon in fall colors. Then simply glue the nuts to the ribbon, using a hot glue gun. Then you can hand the nuts from a chandelier or window. I do this later in the fall and into the holiday season, although I use wide ribbon and scented pinecones.
Those little pumpkins that you can grow or pick up inexpensively ($1 or less) can make great decorations for the table all by themselves. You can step it up a notch, by carving them and inserting different sized candles. If you want the display to be permanent, use fake foam pumpkins that can be carved. They come in many different sizes.
