Bad Things Happen to Good People

From the time I was little I always believed in the notion that if you lived right, good things would happen. As I got older it became apparent to me that this was not the case. Even though I had done everything that I could to be a good wife and mother I still ended up divorced. Sometimes life happens that way. It isn’t fair, but it’s just the way it is. The important thing is that you don’t spend your life beating yourself up about it. Just because bad things have happened to you doesn’t mean you are a bad person.

When I first got divorced I thought God must be punishing me for something. Why else would He allow something like this to happen to me and my son? Needless to say I was feeling a little sorry for myself. As time went on I began to realize that we live in an unjust world. Bad things happen to good people and sometimes bad people get away with things they shouldn’t. It’s the nature of life, and we are reminded of it almost daily. Any time you turn on the news you get an instant reminder of just how bad things really are. Suddenly your own problems don’t seem so bad anymore.

Don’t let yourself get bitter because of your situation. You may not be able to change the past, but you can change the future. You can shape it into whatever you want it to be. Will bad things still happen sometimes? Of course. Trials are inevitable, but you can make the best of them. They are meant to make you stronger. You will never be given more than you can handle, though it may feel that way sometimes. Remember just how strong you really are. Keep your chin up, you can get through anything that is placed before you.
