Balancing Workload during the Busy Holiday Season

Balancing your workload during the busy holiday season can be a real challenge. I don’t know about you but I have had a long list of things to do: shopping, baking, and decorating. Well, the list was longer but I will stop there.

Just before December hit I made arrangements to take time off from my main source of income, writing web content. I have it set to be off the entire week my children are off from school. I still didn’t know how I was going to squeeze in everything else until then.

But then my workload was reduced due to the end of the year and I thought it was perfect timing. I didn’t mind getting a smaller workload so I could concentrate on the things that needed to be done around the house.

I had all these plans for that first week of December when I would have a lighter workload but to my dismay, I got very sick. In fact, so sick I ended up in ER. It was a long week fighting off what was apparently severe inflammation in my chest wall. For more than five days it basically felt like I was constantly having a heart attack. So much for my plans, those quickly went out the window as I tried to do the work I did have and recover at the same time.

So then I thought the second week of December would be my chance to get done what I needed to. However since I am taking off for a week, my workload was increased a bit more so now I am back to figuring it all out.

Some people mistakenly think that if you work from home you can just stop working whenever you want and spend an entire day baking cookies. It really doesn’t work that way. Just like someone who works outside the home has to squeeze it all in, so do we who work from home.

Balancing work during the holiday season hasn’t been as easy as I would have thought it would be. This weekend is Christmas already and while I have most of the things on my list done, there are still other things to tackle. By making my list and checking it twice, along with setting a schedule and planning out the remainder of my week I’m sure it will all come together.
