Be Wary

Be very wary about things electrical. That’s the warning coming from an investigator for an insurance company.

Last week a house in our town burned to the ground. The family lost absolutely everything and had to rely on charity just to have clothes to wear. This seems to happen every year but this year there have been a few more than others.

Then later that week I received a warning from a friend identifying an area of concern. According to the insurance investigator, the cause of the fire was one of those air fresheners that get plugged into the electrical switch and emit spurts of air freshener at regular intervals. The assessor claimed more fires are started by these things than anything else as the plastic is so thin.

Apparently in this case the light would sometimes go out and then later come back on again. This is a sign that it was overheating and is a clear warning. So if you have anything where this is happening, maybe a lamp or some other piece of equipment that flickers on and off, get it checked out. They could be a problem.

Our daughter and her husband recently had the experience of being showered with glass when the light bulb in their tubular lamp exploded and erupted up the top like a volcano. They were both lucky, or as I prefer to believe protected by God, that neither of them were seriously hurt as it showered all over the bed while they were in it. My son in law who was closest to the lamp had slivers of glass stuck all over him like a porcupine.

Be careful too with trees and with leaves collecting in guttering. Otherwise it can cause the water to back up and run over the roof and end up pouring through a light fitting in the ceiling. Water and electricity is never a good mix. Another person I know had a heated light in the bathroom explode and showered her with glass.
