Beach Baby

Living near the beach, my son has been a beach baby since he could sit up. He was crawling in the sand long before he could walk. He’s the second generation beach baby as I have plenty of photos of myself on the beach by the age of two.

The beach holds a lot of fun for a toddler. The sand is fun to play in. It doesn’t seem to matter if they are playing with the sand with their hands or building a sand castle with shovels, sand is just simply fun.

We’ve taken my son’s beach toys out to the sand and let him drive his dump truck around in the sand. He has used a bucket to get water and shovels to dig in the sand. He has used a plastic rake to rake up sand and we even took a little flag to fly from our sand castle.

The one toy that didn’t work out well was the time we took a ball out to the beach. It wasn’t a beach ball. It was one of the heavier, large plastic balls that are so popular in grocery stores, drug stores and any marketplace.

We took the ball out and sat it in the sand. We figured we would get it and play with it a little later. That would have been fine if the wind hadn’t taken it off into the water while we were not looking. By the time we saw the ball, it was over a hundred feet out in the water.

One thing we never do is take our eyes off of my son. Toddlers are fast and my son is no exception. We know that within a few seconds my son could be nowhere in sight. We remain very cautious and safe when we take him to the beach.

Knowing the fun that awaits him at the beach, my son is now excited as soon as we ask him if he would like to go. It is a fun day trip for the entire family.
