Australia is reeling. A staggering number of lives have been lost as a result of the bushfires that have been rampaging for days. Whole towns have been wiped out. Many people have lost their homes and possessions in the worst disaster to hit Australia as bush fires rage through parts of Victoria. Fires have also hit New South Wales but to date no lives have been lost there.
Other than the lives of loved ones, what would you try and save in case of a fire? It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it?
As I started to think about what I’d want to save, it’d be those things that can’t be replaced – things I could never put a price on. Not because they’re so expensive but because of the meaning behind them.
My precious things might include photographs like those on the wedding wall, of my parents’ wedding and our wedding. Our son’s and daughter’s weddings we could still get the negatives and get them re-done. But our and my patents could never be replaced. I’d try and save photo albums showing our children as babies and toddlers, love letters from Mick to me and vice versa, cards and gifts Mick or our children or special friends made, including earrings my daughter designed and had made, the necklace my father gave my mother on their wedding day.
Of course that’s allowing for time to be able to quickly grab anything. Some of these poor people never had to time for even that. No wonder Australia is in shock at present. As a friend of mine said,’it makes you want to hug your kids tight.’ It makes you thankful for your spouse and family. It makes you thank God that they are safe.
In our world with earthquakes, cyclones, floods, tornadoes, terrorism, and other disasters, it’s important every day we let our spouse and our family know how much they mean to us. We need to show them by our actions and our words how much we love them, because in this uncertain world we just don’t know what the next day may bring. So if out haven’t told your spouse or family how much you love them and given them a kiss or hug, why not take time and do it now?
