10 Things You Didn’t Know About the New Food Blogger

I am not new to families.com but I now get the privilege of blogging for the food blog on a regular basis. If you’ve read my blogs, you probably know a few things about me already: I have twin girls who are almost 20 months old, along with the other three children. . .making a total of 5 kids (under the age of 7)! I live in the inner city. I know way too much about nursing babies and advocate it any chance I get. We are a homeschooling family with a particularly inquisitive son.

I have even done a few guest blogs in food when I get a chance so you may also know that I LOVE my crock pot and that I’m also the “Sneaky Mama”. (Able to sneak fruits and vegetables into my kids’ foods without them knowing.) I have a massive recipe collection, and now that I’m blogging in food regularly, I will share my recipes! But I thought an appropriate introduction may include some things that you don’t already know about me. . .as it pertains to food of course.

#1. My mom never cooked. It wasn’t until I got married that one of my college professors (we got married 12 days after we graduated) gave me a bread baking book. She said that whenever I was tempted to fight with my husband I should go bake bread instead. The kneading does have the cathartic effect of releasing tension!

#2. I make almost everything from scratch. That includes ice cream and bread, if I can. The only thing I don’t make from scratch at least on a semi-regular basis are noodles.

#3. I am a sucker for a good brownie. Among my massive recipe collection, I have about 150 brownie recipes, most of which I’ve tried.

#4. My husband bakes pie crust. In the early days of our marriage, I quickly became known as someone who was pretty handy in the kitchen. We used to bake pies for bake sales. But despite #2, I almost never make my own pie crust. I can. . .but the crust is the boring part of the pie to me.

#5. Along with #4, I NEVER use canned pie filling. That would go against #2!

#6. I have never entered a baking or cooking contest although I’ve been encouraged to do so by friends. Maybe I’ll have to give the 1 million dollars from Pillsbury a shot!

#7. I spent a summer working in Mexico in an orphanage. The result? Learning how to make things like “arroz con leche” and tortillas from scratch.

#8. I love Mexican cooking and regularly make authentic Mexican dishes. I also make my fair share of Tex Mex.

#9. My family is German, and so I have numerous authentic recipes from my grandmother. My husband’s family has Amish heritage and so we also have a collection of recipes that hail from middle America. (Shoofly pie anyone?)

#10. I love to try new recipes. I have only a handful of standard favorites but I try something new at least three to four times per week. If it passes the family test it gets incorporated into a regular plan.

So there you have it! As I said, I’m thrilled to be blogging in food. Have any food and cooking related questions? Feel free to ask! Until then. . .happy cooking!
