This is a bit of an off the cuff blog, but last night on the Sci Fi channel, they aired the last first run episode of Stargate SG-1. The show premiered in September of 1997 and was a follow up to a 1994 film. I have some nostalgia related to Stargate SG-1 because it premiered the first year my husband and I lived together. We weren’t huge television watchers, but we’d been big fans of the movie when it came out.
We set aside some time the night it aired and watched the two-hour premiere. We had no idea then, that this series would run for 10 years nor that we would be committed to it for that long. The show appealed to us, in large part because it was fun, entertaining and it made you laugh. The first year of the series was a lot like other science fiction shows – in everything except the irreverent tones that were delivered so excellently by Richard Dean Anderson’s Jack O’Neill or the brilliant explorer and passionate husband that was Michael Shanks’ Daniel Jackson.
We Loved This Show
At the time, most of the principals of the SG-1 team were our age. Shanks was just 24 going on 25 when it started, so were we. The actor married during the series. So did we. The actor had kids during the series and so did we. We followed the series with dedication on Showtime. When Showtime ended the show and it moved to the Sci Fi Channel, we almost missed it and then stumbled over it again. So now, for ten years, the night the first run episodes aired, we always made a nice dinner and sat down to enjoy our show. We’ve watched it with other companion series over the years from Doctor Who to Stargate: Atlantis to The Dresden Files, Eureka and more.
These were our evenings. Evenings we could sit and laugh at the show, talk about the ideas, enjoy a good meal and no matter how crazy our schedules were (and in the last ten years, there were some crazy schedules) this was our night.
We’re going to miss SG-1. I know they are making a couple of movies to follow it up and we’ll likely enjoy them too – but after ten years of sojourning wherever the gate deposited us – it’s sad to see the gate close. We still have Stargate:Atlantis – but it’s just not the same.
So thank you to Robert C. Cooper, Brad Wright, Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Claudia Black, Ben Browder and so many, many more – we can’t say thank you enough for the last ten years.
