A $500 Pair of Earphones??

I have a friend who is very serious about music and the way things sound. A music major in college, he is always commenting on the speaker choice restaurants make, and where they have chosen to set up their speaker. He always has some sort of suggestion about how they could have better set up, or what they could have used instead in order to get a more realistic sound.

I wonder what he would say about these.

Shure electronics has come up with a set of earphones that they claim will produce the most true to life sound possible. These earphones are not your typical pair of ear buds, having three speakers in each ear. One tweeter and two woofers provide you with the ultimate in sound, while isolating sound sleeves block up to 90% of the world around you.

They sound great. In fact would probably be one of the first at the store to buy them until I saw the price tag $499.00. Given that no music playing device I my home is even worth $500 I don’t know that I could possibly justify purchasing a pair of earphones that expensive.

In fact, I’m not sure who could or would want a pair of earphones so expensive. Sure they are probably the bets of the best, but the ear buds that came included with my iPod aren’t too shabby either.

I also have the sneaking suspicion that the moment I tried to use $500 earphones I would immediately lose my mp3 player complete with the expensive ear phones attached.

I know a decent amount about electronics and portable audio and can’t think of anyone who would seriously buy these, except someone who just had an exceptional amount of money to burn and wanted a bizarre new toy.

What do you think?
