A Child’s Frugal Bedroom

A child’s room is their safe haven. It’s where they go when they are happy, sad, afraid and angry. It is a place for them to be alone, share secrets with friends, read, write, do homework, play and just be a kid. I’ve come to understand that this place is almost sacred to a child. And no matter their age, it’s important that their bedroom reflect who they are and certain parts of the personality.

If you had asked me a year and a half ago if I thought I’d ever have any more children than my beautiful little girl and my handsome little boy, I’d have laughed and called you crazy. And truth be told, I didn’t have anymore children myself. But I did wind up with five children a year and a half later. My boyfriend and I have five children ranging in age from seven to twelve. In fact we have two twelve year olds! Each child is unique and different and has their own personality and interests that they want to see come out in the room.

We have one who loves cats, one who is obsessed with horses and riding even though she’s never ridden a day in her life, one who has a major monkey obsession, one who can’t get enough of Asian Flair and has an addiction to panda bears and Japanese art, and the last one, the only boy, who would literally own a dragon if such a thing existed.

But can you imagine having to decorate five different bedrooms? Yep, it’s going to be a challenge, one that I am tackling feet first. I will share my experience here at families.com once we get started in a few months, for all of you to read and laugh along with me. I am a frugal fanatic first and foremost. I will not change that even while I’m decorating their rooms. We will use what we have, we will decorate with items rather than modifying the entire room, and I will do all of it for less than $500, which is about one hundred dollars per child.

In the meantime, I’m going to share with you a few articles on the tips and pointers that I’ve learned along the way. Ideas to get your mind working and things that did and didn’t work for us.

Remember, this is your child’s room and they should have a lot of input. Don’t forget to consult them, unless of course your two year old things that a live lion would be a cool addition to his zoo themed room!

Have a great week!
