It’s not everyday that you can travel along a zip line while you are sailing the high seas. But that’s exactly what the folks at Royal Caribbean are offering cruisers in the months to come. An onboard zip line and a whole lot more.
The company, which pioneered rock climbing walls and ice skating rinks on cruise ships says its latest extreme offering will be located at the back of its spectacular 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas, which sets sail in December 2009.
The new vessel will be the largest cruise ship ever built and will cater to families. In addition to the zip line, the ship will house a kid-friendly amusement area called the Boardwalk that will boast a hand-carved merry-go-round, carnival games and a Coney Island atmosphere — something that no cruise line has ever tried before.
The record-breaking, 220,000-ton ship will also feature an AquaTheater, a massive amphitheater around a pool at the back of the ship that will be the site of water-based acrobatic and synchronized swimming shows. During the day the freshwater pool, the largest and deepest ever on a ship, will be open to passengers for swimming and SCUBA lessons.
Guests will also have their choice of two rock-climbing walls. The dueling walls will be a first for the cruise line industry. The new ship will also feature 28 two-deck-high “loft suites” that will offer expansive ocean views from soaring floor-to-ceiling windows.
In addition, the ground-breaking vessel will also house a Central Park area complete with live trees and several outdoor restaurants. Royal Caribbean executives said the new ship will feature seven areas dubbed “neighborhoods” that will make cruisers feel as though they are strolling down a land-based travel destination.
Officials with the company say Oasis of the Seas will be a “game-changing” vessel that will revolutionize the experience of cruising. It will be more than 40% larger than the largest cruise ship afloat and be able to transport more than double the amount of passengers most cruise ships typically hold.
